More Yellow Dice means more dead PCs?

By AWAD, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So we have about 7 sessions under our belts and for combat some people have 2-3 yellow dice for that combat skill. Means we are seeing more triumphs or advantages to trigger criticals. Thus the GM is tossing some meaner weapons and nemesis types at us. So I am seeing more percentage dice bounce around and held breath. Those are some mean dice, reminds me of Rolemaster from ages past.

Does SWEOE get deadlier to the PCs as they gain more experience? We have not played enough to make any sort of conclusion but curious if anyone else has played very high or many sessions.

Not unless the GM has + bonuses on the crit roll. He could mess you up quite a bit, but having to track down decent medical care is a great game hook anyway.

It sounds like you're surprised that when you show the GM how easy it is to take down some enemies, that he sends harder enemies at you.

PC death is not exactly easy to accomplish unless you've taken several crits already or are dealing with Vicious weapons + Killing Blows. Getting hurt or knocked out doesn't mean "you lose." It's a plot hook. And if you die, hey, it's a nasty 'verse.

But yes I would assume that the more XP you get, the more dangerous the game is for you, because the enemies will be more competent and there are not a ton of ways to add to your Wound/Strain thresholds. However you should be coming into money and XP, meaning you can afford Talents that protect you, gear with better soak/defense, and mods for that gear.

It should get tougher, which might translate to deadlier if you're primarily engaged in combat.

But a decent GM will throw easier mooks at you from time to time, to remind you how far you've progressed as PCs.

You may just want to chat up your GM a little. While it's certainly expected that the enemies will get nastier, it's also important that the GM remember that the system is also built to allow the Stormtroopers you met on your first adventure to still be viable enemies on your 50th adventure. If the GM isn't keeping this in mind (or is used to other game systems where PC naturally become more resilient/harder to hit with XP) then he might end up throwing more then you can handle at you.

You know... You do have a ship. Get more bacta tanks, and let the players keep a spare character on the ship. (Spare characters are also useful for visiting players.)

This is the only reason our Mechanic ever seems to leave the ship to be honest. In our last fight, our Marauder was pretty gimped up. He'll barely be conscious in a day, and it will take a few weeks for those crits to heal. He'll have his full wound threshold in time for the session after this.

Short answer is yes.

Explanation is that...

- it is much easier to increase offense than defense

- more dice = greater possible range of results = higher possible damage, in other words more swingy

- very easy for PCs to have radically different defenses so in order to challenge the sturdiest party member requires enemies that can annihilate the least durable

Which is a long winded way of saying it's not terribly well balanced and your GM really has to be on the ball for both enemy selection and how those enemies choose their targets.

As a GM, I reward intelligence. If the PCs want to fight foolishly and reckless, they will find a lot more trouble and tougher enemies. If they use their wits to choose their fights, they will face appropriately challenge opponents.

The opposition should be appropriate.

Rule #2 - If you entered a fair fight, you failed at planning.

If you’re worried, consider investing in the Durable talent (-10 to Critical Hits).

I think people need to remember, GM's especially, that those advantages and triumphs don't have to be spent on crits. You can do so much more interesting things with them. I'll pull out the crits if they are getting too cocky or if I want them to know that the fight they are in is very serious.
