So what exactly is the tie between Discipline and Force powers?

By yeti1069, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I've read through the section (in the Beta release, and skimmed the actual product) on the Force, but other than a couple of specific effects of a power somewhere, I can't find any tie between Disciple and The Force alluded to in the Skills section description of the uses of Discipline.

Did I miss something somewhere?

On a similar note, do Force powers all just WORK, or are there opposed checks, or difficulty checks, to be made?

Opposed check when you are doing the ol "these are not the droids you are looking for"..... trick.

Opposed Discipline checks? Does your Force rank play any part in that, or the number of Force points produced?

Where is that written?

Yes, and Force rank is a factor in so much as the more ○ you spend increases the duration of the effect.

CRB p. 282

Discipline got added as part of the EotE Beta updates, so that certain effects, specifically the "affect thoughts" Control Upgrade for Influence and Move's Control Upgrade to attack with a manipulated object which had been called out very early in the Beta process as being far too powerful and needing some means of being resisted.

As for Force Rating, it still plays a roll in that you need to generate Light Side points in order to activate a power in the first place; even if your Discipline check trounces the established difficulty, it doesn't matter if you don't generate any usable Force Points.

Thanks, you two.

Yeah, part of the problem here is that I've only got the Beta document to read from home, and I'm noticing just how much it differs from the end product.

Also, I guess I'm used to SWSE where every interaction between a Force power and another character was against a defense value, so seeing some abilities that just work is kind of jarring.

Finally, I really dislike the layout of the book. It's truly awful. In this case, having Discipline say, "Go look at the Force chapter for more info," and then not having an explicit section discussing Discipline is kind of a pain.

In the specific power write-up. So far it's only in a single expansion of the Influence power.
