Possible list?

By DFocke, in X-Wing

I am fairly new to X-Wing, and would like some more experienced players opinion on a squad I'm thinking of using. So without further ado

Garven Dreis

Red Squadron Pilot

"Dutch" Vander w/ ion cannon

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion cannon

I like this list for its sharing of focus and target lock, decent PS, and just the fact that I love the Y-Wing. And have ever since I was a kid. What I would like to find out is types of builds that would give this squad trouble, and any basic strategies for taking on the more common builds.

Its not spectacular but there is also nothing really wrong with it either. You have some firepower, durability, and utility all built in there along with a little bit of action efficiency.

The two named fighters are the obvious targets because they can give out other actions but not much more so than their more basic peers. If you can fly it well you should have success against all kinds of squads.

I would downgrade the Red squadron to a Rookie. That way you're moving at 2,2,6,6. With those 2 points that you saved, you could give either two of them R2 droids. Or R5 droids if you're into that. You could also consider dropping the Ion cannon turret on Dutch and give the rookie an APT instead.

The logic behind that is that as it is, he's probably the primary target for the enemy. Getting rid of the ICT makes him seem less threatening. And at the same time, it makes the rookie more threatening. If the enemy goes after the rookie to kill him before the APT gets off, then Garven/Dutch both last much longer. If the enemy goes after Garven/Dutch first still, the rookie gets to blow something up with the APT. I would recommend not attempting to attack Turr or Soontir with the APT as they'll just stay out of R1.

this is a solid all-round list. even big ships could be troubled by ur double ions and they should give u a fair chance of beating tie swarms. imo Dutch should be the prime target here for enemy ships - keep him in the asteroid field and at range if possible. i suggest testing it out a bit and see if it suits ur style.

another variation with a lil more punch (but less versatility) would be...

Garven Dreis (26)

Red Squadron Pilot (23)

"Dutch" Vander w/ ion cannon (28)

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion cannon Red Squadron Pilot (23)

you have another 3 attack dice ship (that does more damage), could also try...

Garven Dreis (26)

Red Squadron Pilot + R2 Astromech (24)

"Dutch" Vander w/ ion cannon (28)

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion cannon Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

something else to consider...

Garven Dreis (26)

Biggs (25)

"Dutch" Vander w/ ion cannon (28)

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion cannon Rookie Pilot (21)

This is a riskier plan in a way as u r not supporting Biggs with any upgrades for defense - it means u will have to play smart with him early and NOT throw him in the font lines where he will last 1-2 turns. Keep him back (range band 1-2 behind Rookie and Garven), choose focus for defense and try to limit the attacks on him to 2-3 per round max, remember u can give him double focus for defense if u really need to. The potential payoff for this version is that you should get a few good attacks in with ur other guys while Biggs is taking the heat.

Thanks for the comments. I especially like the idea of trading out the gold pilot for another red. I think I just need to play more games and just see how it works for me.

No problem. 4 Pilot Skill pilots like Dagger Squadron Pilot and Red Squadron Pilot are popping up quite a bit right now - perhaps due to the success of the worlds squad that ran 2x Dagger with Adv. Sensors + 2x Red Squadron? 4 PS pilots shoot before most non-named tie fighters and Rookie X-Wings. Thats worth considering.

Food for thought. This squad made 4th at worlds...

100pts

Rookie Pilot (21)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Luke Skywalker + Draw Their Fire + Shield Upgrade + R2D2 (37)

pretty cool squad. It lost the eventual winner of worlds who played Red Daggers (2x Red Sqdrn + 2x Dagger Sqdrn/ad.sensors) but it was close. Both squads pack 4 ships with 3 attack die. In the end the avd. sensors may have given the winner the edge, although firing before those rookie pilots would have certainly helped as well.
