Organizing your mommentum

By Tader Salad, in UFS Rules Q & A

Ok this spawns from a topic yoshgex1122 brought up a couple threads down that was successfully answered by Antigoth. It was mentioned that the correct way to store your mommentum is in a face down single pile, uniformly stacked and not altered. My question is: Is this exact procedure for mommentum storing hard-lined in the comprehensive rules, tournament floor rules, or rules that are coming out soon?

My playgroup has been doing things a little bit different can you tell us if any of these are legal:

1. Mommentum in a single pile, but the pile is slightly fanned out in a straight line to make counting it on the spot easier for both players.

2. Same senario as #1 but with certain mommentum off-center to show they need to be remembered.

3. Mommentum is all under the character, but the pile is sticking out in different directions depending on what attack/type of card it is.

Is it the will of our lord and savior (a.k.a. FFG) or is it at the discrestion and judgement of our local scout/rules advisor?

1. i do this everyone i have ever seen play the game does this so i would guess that it is fine

2/3. that is against the rules (i forgot the reason)

The new rules document specifically states:

4.2 Momentum
The momentum is a pile of facedown cards that are usually kept next to, or sometimes
underneath your character. Momentum represents getting the upper hand in the fight.
4.2.1 When a player adds cards to their momentum they may not look at these cards,
however they may place them in any order as they combine the with the rest of their
momentum.
4.2.1.1 Once cards are added to the momentum they may not be reordered except by card
effect.
4.2.2 Unless instructed to by a card effect, neither play may look at the contents of either
players momentum.
4.2.3 All cards in a players momentum must be kept in a single pile together so it is clear
that they are all in that player’s momentum.
4.2.4 The number of cards in either players momentum should be known to either player. A
player can request a count of his opponents momentum at any time.
4.2.5 When cards are being placed into momentum, they may not be physically
distinguishable from the other cards in momentum other than the order of placement, IE A
player may not tilt one of the cards at a different angle then the rest of his momentum to
remember what it is.

So by keeping your momentum nicely piled where you see that there are 5 cards the momentum, but no one card is distinguishable you're covering both 4.2.4 and 4.2.5 in one shot.

Very informative, thanks anitgoth. Now i just have to drill myself to not stray from that. :)

1 caveat. Cards that are 'placed face up' in momentum would be distinguishable from the rest. Maintaining the order is still important.

Can face up momentum that have an enhance ability that can only be used while face up in the momentum be askew of the others so that it could be remember that it was there in order to use the enhance? Now I am speaking about in tournament play, casual play can be lax I am sure.

according to the new rules no you can't. You have to remember that it is there by either placing it on top and leaving it there, or simply remembering. Now if it gets buried underneath some other cards you are allowed to lift your momentum to reference the text as long as neither you nor your opponent can see any other cards in your momentum and you place all cards back in the correct order

Here are three examples of legal ways to do your momentum.

On the left Mitsurugi obviously doesn't care about the order or contents of his momentum. He has piled it in one pile under his character card. Either player may count or ask for it to be counted if there is ever any doubt as to how much momentum there is.

In the middle Yun-Seong has a face up momentum. He has fanned his out vertically just a bit to make easier to see that there's a face up card in his momentum.

On the right Chun-Li prefers to place her momentum beside her character. She has also fanned them out diagonally so that the name of the face up attack can easily be discerned.

As long as you aren't doing anything to specially designate any momentum it's fine. In casual play of course, whatever you and your opponent can agree on is fine.

Does this whole not allowed to rearrange thing apply to the discard pile as well. I have always played as such, but i would just like to check lol.

Discard pile may not be re-arranged. Note the existence of cards like The Merchant's Message last season and now Researching the Past.

Just so I can get this staright in my head.

I place a card in my momentum face up because of an enhance. The next card I place in my momentum (face down) can be placed under the face up one. etc. Now If I have a card effect that says flip a momentum face up Does it have to stay in the same position in the pile or can it be placed on top?

If a card is turned face up in your momentum, it stays in the same order. you simply alter it to face up. So if you have:

1 top
2 middle
3 bottom
and you turn #2 face up, it will still be:

1 face down
2 face up
3 face down
