Query about storage

By Eltnot, in X-Wing

I have a good sized order coming in that will allow me to field at least one of every ship. As a result my current method of keeping ships in a shoebox in their plastic clam shell packages is not going to be suitable anymore. I'm intending to go with creating my own storage using foam and cutting out the plastic clamshell holders and pushing those into the foam to hold the miniatures in place. I need to know how deep the plastic is for the Lambda Shuttle so that I can but foam of the appropriate thickness. Can someone provide me with the dimensions please?

Should end up something like this:

Looks to me like the plastic insert is 2-3/8 inches thick from top to bottom, and the depression for the ship is pretty close to 2" deep.

So would need 2" thick foam to hold the plastic for the shuttle? I thought it would be about that, just wanted to confirm.

2" will do it.

I currently use pluck foam, and 1.5" isn't enough, but 2" is fine, with the Lambda on its side.

What kind of case are you using? I am doing a similar thing (no plastic tho, just cutting out holes after tracing the ships) and don't know what to carry them in

I intend to get a metal case from Bunnings. They go for about $30 and look like this:

I have a case like the one above. It was originally designed for power tools, but it works excellent for holding my minis. I can even keep them on the stands/bases! :3

This thread inspired me to do some research about storage for X-Wing and I, quite by accident, stumbled upon Battle Foam. The cool thing there is that they have custom-fit foam already cut for X-Wing!

I'm serious thinking about getting the P.A.C.K. Go backpack with the the X-Wing foam packs.

There's a variety of options and they are great if you want to use the same bag for carrying different armies if you are a miniature wargamer.

Some choices are:

KR Multicase http://www.krmulticase.com/buyarmystorage.aspx?system=STAR&army=XW

Laser Touch (Australia) http://lasertouch.com.au/Foam/Wargaming/WarFoam/X-Wing.php

Battle Foam http://us.battlefoam.com/star-wars-game-with-wave-3-foam-kit-for-the-p-a-c-k-216-bf/

I'm sure that there are others that I'm not aware of.

I'm using a KR box with Malifaux foam.. Which I feel is better than the X-Wing foam for X-Wing, I know Kyle was moaning about his KR box tonight.

I love my battlefoam cases! Just ordered another custom tray also.

I've got a battlefoam sword bag on it's way with custom trays that'll hold my intended fleet, plus accessories, and had enough room for a 2" pluck tray for overage. When I outgrow it, I figure I'll order a second, and have a rebel bag and an imperial bag. I planned my trays out already so that they are strictly rebel or imperial to make this easy, and not have to rebuy anything.
