I've often thought that the limitations on the technology back in the seventies put a brake on his imagination and probably made Star Wars a better movie. If he had been allowed to do anything he wanted like he did with the prequels, I'm betting a lot fewer people would have bought in to his vision.
Star Wars EU now Cannon... again?
And not having absolute control and still having an 'independent' mindset made him give the actors more leeway in the roles allowing them to give better performances. Most of the cast were newcomers and did a good, though admittedly not perfect, job. But in the prequels he had an absolute dream cast of talented actors that gave what were probably the worst performances of their careers mostly because every move they made was either tightly controlled or speaking to a dubious cgi creation.
From what I read of her comments it isn't like all previous levels of canon are now equal, more that there will likely still be levels but the story group will decide which bits they like. Am sure interanlly they will still have the Holocron in the same way - if only to remember the decisions that have been made. Otherwise we'll end up down the route of no continuity... which would suck!
Most people seem to be misunderstanding this news.
"Going Forward" is key here.
What this means to me is that with the new films, everything around them will be vetted by the story group for canon status.
So books, comics, TV, maybe even games, going forward will all be canon, because they will be created with that in mind, whereas much of the EU was created in a vacuum and has had to be retrofitted with various 'levels' of canon.
Nothing in his statements means that ANY of the existing EU will definitely be considered, despite many people's (myself very much included!) wishful thinking.

This isn't a CANNON at all. The word is written canon.
We now know in retrospect after witnessing the horrors of I-III, that Marcia Lucas was an incredibly good editor. She should get a lifetime achievement award for her editting work on Lucas' movies from American Graffiti up through Return of the Jedi. Their divorce was really bad for us, the movie audience! I think the correct term here is 'regretrospect'
And the reason 4-6 were so good was that there were still people who could smack George Lucas with a rolled up newspaper and tell him 'No! Bad Lucas!' There are a large number of terrible ideas that were stopped. Like making C3P0 a slimy used car salesman in personality. When 1-3 rolled around, he had complete control, so his bad ideas got the green light.
The greatest moment in Star Wars history is IMO when George Lucas was done with Star Wars (yes that was the name of the movie) and he realized it wasn't good. So they went back and reworked it until it was. They delayed the movie a year from its original release date.
George was basically an unknown in Hollywood he put everything on the line. If the movie had been bad, no one would have gone to see it. It would have been a financial failure, and it would have disappeared into a vast collection of bad sci-fi b-movies. Instead it was wonderful and the world of Star Wars was born.
Fast forward 20 years. Star Wars is as recognizable as Coke, no matter what kind of movie Phantom Menace was it was going to be a huge success. It would be a successful movie if only the people waiting in line to see it saw it. I think many of us remember this. We didn't even know it was a bad movie after we had seen it. We had to go see it again (Many of us in theaters) before we realized that this was not the Star Wars movies we had been hoping for for 20 years. George literally had nothing at stake, at least not financially. Even though he funded the movie 100% by himself, there was no way it wouldn't make a bundle of money.
After 2 more prequels none of which were any good. I just wished these movies hadn't been so easy for George.
After that I just wanted an apology from George. I had given him my love, my money and my childhood, and he hadn't given me his best.
I choose to take him selling to Disney as his apology.

Yeah, I think that limitation increase creativity. Take the Wampa scene on Hoth, originally you didn't ever see much of the Wampa, just an arm here, hear a growl and see the Luke start to panic. It created a tension because it was mysterious. The re-released ESB they show the whole beast and it just doesn't seem as scary or exciting.
I have to admit I enjoyed the Han and jabba scene in IV.
Still Lucas is a hack. The best sw films are Empire and Jeff the two he did not direct.
the only thing i worry about with disney, is are they going to dumb it down for the kids?
are we going to see CARS in space "X-Wings with eyeballs and mouths"?
that is what worries me, Disney is a super power by itself, and that is something to be afraid of.
we can only hope the JJ Abrams keeps them in line on a clear vision of this galaxy far far away

I don't think so.. Disney made the Avengers, which was great... and well JJ Abrams has apologized for all the lens flair in Star Trek...
One thing I wish wasn't canon:
I read 'Vector Prime' and I had to not finish it.
Star Wars just can't be Star Wars without Chewie. Especially to me since growing up, Chewbacca was one of the first Star Wars characters that I ever saw. And to see him get smashed by a moon?
It's heartbreaking. I still get choked up a bit even mentioning it.
ever wonder if they make special shampoos for wookies?
you know for wind damaged hair?
keeping a shine?
man stylists on Kashik must make a killing......(i know i spelled it wrong, im not that big a geek and i dont carry a star wars dictionary-so dont hurt me)
imagine the split ends, and just how much detangler does one wookie need?
what about pooping?
thats some long hair........
bet that can get messy, especially if the artificial gravity gives out in the middle of a number 2. and even worse if he just ate chinese

SSSSSSssssHHHhhhhhh!!!!!! Don't give them any ideas like that.
Avengers was good and Tron Legacy shows they are capable of repackaging my youth and selling it to me. I have high hopes for the new films, after all, Lucas isn't directing and neither is Ewe Bolle.
He did film the lightsabre fight between Jade and Luke, it never made the final cut though. Shame really.

This is honestly the first thing that's come out that's interested me even a little bit in the new SW movies. I was pretty disheartened when they said they would NOT do the Thrawn trilogy. It seems like such a no-brainer. Discouraged to hear that they're giving the car keys to JJ. Very discouraged to hear that they wanted to bring back Ford, Fisher and Hamill. No one wants to see The Geriatric Bunch saving the galaxy. I was all in favor of keeping the characters young, but re-casting the roles (hated JJ Trek, but thought the casting, except for Chekov, was great). But if they wanted to Tron Legacy youthenize them I think I'd be good with that. Maybe give Luke a haircut, but otherwise I could get behind it.
Disney still sucks.
Edited by Hawkeye88The hell? Who wouldn't want to see the original cast return?

I'm mostly with you on all of that. I was super bummed out when I heard the news about Disney purchasing Star Wars, but heck they can't do much worse than Lucas has with 1, 2, and 3, not to mention the re-releases. I think that Disney has done an alright job with Marvel, you can nit pick it but it could have been way worse. JJ Abrams is hit or miss on his movies, mostly miss though. Super 8 was pretty good so I'll give him some credit for that. There had better not be a bunch of lens flares in 7, I don't recall seeing more than 1 for all 3 original movies combined. I didn't mind the Star Trek movies JJ did other than the ridiculous lens flares all the time, but I'm not a Star Trek guy.
The hell? Who wouldn't want to see the original cast return?
Why would I be interested in seeing 70 year olds fly around pretending that they're 30-40? Just a horrible, horrible idea.

I like Trek. The first JJ Trek movie was horrible. Great cast, good acting, way over-done sets, one of the worst plots I've seen in my life. There were scenes that were ripped wholesale from other movies. It was just bad. So bad.
I didn't mind the SW re-releases too much. Yes, Han shot first. No, Luke does not scream/cry when he JUMPS off the platform in ESB. 3 was > 2 was > 1. I don't mind them adding abilities to R2. The plot holes definitely should have been tightened up and the dialog (particularly the love interest stuff, and force-choke the Midichlorians) should have been better, but overall I liked it.
But if JJ does to SW what he did to ST, or if Disney starts doing Marve/SW cross-overs, then I'm selling all my SW stuff. I'm pretty patient, but I don't tolerate stupidity.
Oh, an not just no lens flare, but no shaky-cam. If you can't tell a story without those two crutches then you're in the wrong industry.
Edited by Hawkeye88Of the many issues with Crystal Skull, Harrison Ford was not one of them. And I really don't think we are expecting a whole lot of them. Besides, I doubt they will repeat the mistakes they made with Christopher Lee. This is going to be passing of the torch. Sort of need the original actors.
I'm all about done with "adaptations". Bring on the new stories. I will always have my old stories, continuity be damned.
