Star Wars EU now Cannon... again?

By newmagrathea, in X-Wing

While the EU has certainly put many ideas out there plenty of buildable space still exists and by keeping EU as canon they do not alienate a large portion of the Star Wars fan base that has grown up with it. Like it or not it has shaped "history" in the galaxy far, far way and while the details could certainly be argued the overall storylines should remain for better or worse.

Yay :) nothing else to say lol

It also sounds like some things while considered cannon will be mostly ignored. To be perfectly honest not all of EU is good, some of it is pretty poor, on the other hand some of it is excellent and I think rivals the original trilogy.. * cough cough make Heir to the Empire a movie cough*.

I'd be all over a TV series based on the Rogue Squadron books.

That's great news.

I was a little worried when they announced marvel were taking over from dark horse.

Now I am soothed.

Except that isn't at all what he is saying. The story group will help determine canon. Nothing about keeping the old stuff. Which is good, because I don't see how a good movie can come out of what the books became post NJO.

I heard at some point that they were definitely not making the Thrawn trilogy into movies. But I really hope that was either a misdirection/misinterpretation or that they change their minds! Those books are integral to how the EU has developed to this point, because that trilogy started it all.

II wouldnt count on it.

Some things might be imported but other stuff is in conflict with the prequels.

Other stuff is just silly.

No one can tell me what I consider cannon but me. There is no Star Wars Pope. He died when he made Episodes I-III.

The writers are just covering all bases to allow development of totally new stories - i doubt whether they will copy exactly any existing stories - i believe they are attempting to create totally new stories with the EU as a backdrop. Imo the characters in the new movies will be totally original and any reference to existing EU characters will be minor (just guessing).

Some of which is hardly better than fan-fic.

Considering the age of mark, carrie, harrison, I am imagining a new time period after all of that.

They are all grandparent age, so maybe the young actors being cast arent the jacen/jaina generation, but their grandchildren.

That's what I was hoping but...

moar clarity

Intersting how the article is also hoping for Mara Jade toys. They have already been released.

I gave a Luke/Mara set to my Mum.

And she put them on top of my wedding cake. :)

Please dear fluffy sheep, let them bury any reference to the whole Sun Crusher garbage.

The European Union has always had cannons...

Sun crusher, not great.

But it did introduce the Maw, Admrial Dala, and continuing point of contention over a redeemed jedi who made Tarkin look like a boy scout.

Supposedly Lucas added Mara Jade in from the Thrawn books into Return of the Jedi in the Jabba the Hutt scene in his tragic re-release. I think that there was supposed to be other things added in the re-release to tie the movies to EU.

TBH it sounds like it's always been... the EU will stay except where the Movies write over it... It's like the Clone Wars Comics being superseded by the cartoon.

And really it doesn't matter much. Stories are stories, it won't ruin my enjoyment of the EU if bits of it aren't officially Cannon. I still love Mace Windu and Yoda doing reservoir dogs.. and that is definitely not Cannon.

Actor age is meaningless if they pull a Tron Legacy and CG the folks young again.

This is potentially great news.

Timothy Zahn is a genious.

these are by far the best books i have ever read. Lucas should have hired him to write 1-3.

i wonder if mark lost any weight to play luke again, he was chubby in criminal minds last year.

but we have to remember, if this is post new jedi order, no Chewy.........

I would think that they would have to recast the actors, but they could probably nudge the new actors looks in the way of the original actors with prosthetics, makeup and cgi.

I totally agree with you KILODEN on 1-3, I don't think that George should have directed either. He lost his edge a long time ago.

George's strength isn't directing. At all. His strength is coming up with concepts and visuals that are appealing from an aesthetic point of view, alongside imagining up creatures and such, or taking old concepts and putting them into a new stage, as if viewing them through a kaleidoscope. The reason the original trilogy worked so well was because George worked alongside a number of creative people and had to work to get results he wanted. With episodes I-III he had far too much control over the entire process with nobody to give him any sort of feedback while everyone was too afraid to stop being yes men.

Indeed. Imagining Empire directed by Lucas instead of Kirshner will give you nightmares.
