A Question about Hacan's ability

By kaiteinomen, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Hello everyone!

I just want to confirm Hacan's ability which allows you to trade action cards. It means that:

1.You can spend trade goods buying other players' cards.

2.You can sell your cards for trade goods.

3.You can exchange cards with other players.

4.You can give someone you cards for nothing.

Are these all correct? Thanks!

"During the Status Phase, you may trade Action Cards with other players".

I take this to mean that the Hacan player can trade Action Cards with other players on a 1-for-1 basis. Simply giving another player an Action Card is not a trade.

So, I would say that only #3 is permissible. However since trade goods may be given to other players at any time the other player may hold out for a bribe before agreeing to trade an Action Card.

We've always played that all of the listed options are valid. #4 probably wouldn't be chosen too often, but still valid.

All 4 options are valid. The ability for "trade action cards" does not specify it has to be 1-for-1, nor does it specify it has to be only for other cards.

For one thing, TG trading is valid at any time anyway, so you can give them to anyone at any time for any reason. (With the common consensus exception that if something is causing you to lose TGs, you can't give them to another player first to avoid the loss then give them back, of course).

As for #4, the time it usually happens is if the Hacan are acting as a "broker" for two other players, especially if one player is giving a card toa nother; Player A would give a card to Hacan. And Hacan would give it to the target.

I would actually add a #5, slightly related to #4:

- The Hacan can be given Action Cards by another player.

I'll see if I can find a rule to back up this whole "not necessarly 1-for-1" thing, but I can say it's definitely the TI3 community consensus that all 4 are valid - I can't think of a single game I've played where that hasn't been the case.
