Starfield

By Valinore, in X-Wing

Wow. Thanks for the dimension info on that mat.

Whatever the reason for them not being available yet, or even at all, the lack of communication about it is quite dissapointing. I had it on backorder for months and recently cancelled the order. A lot of shops still sell it, and on numerous websites they had a delivery date of December. When asked that was the date they got from the supplier.

So many people will have that money locked in, waiting for a product FFG does not really seem to want to sell anymore. The least they could do is give a heads up and a status update.

I know a number of people are baffled as to why they haven't simply announced that the tiles aren't happening. Maybe they want to lock down their alternative and announce it at the same time.

I've been waiting hoping for tiles (or a mat) that hold together and hopefully comes with scenarios, but...

If they don't announce they have another option comming soon any of the holdouts will jump ship and battle elsewhere.

Meaning what exactly? ^_^

I'm not sure what you mean by holdouts, or battling elsewhere. If you mean pursuing other avenues of gameplay surfaces, they're already way behind the curve on that now, with the proliferation of game mat options out there. If you mean another game entirely, I have trouble believing that anybody who was plugged in enough to be aware of the star tiles in the first place is going to be so overwrought with anger that they sell off their X-Wing miniatures and go play some Attack Wing or something. ;)

Now - I agree: if they do in fact know that the tiles are dead, they really should put that out there. They should have put it out there and apologized and explained the minute that they figured out it was a no go. I don't pretend to know why exactly they HAVEN'T done that yet. But it's not like anybody paid up front ala Kickstarter for a product that's not being delivered now. If you did pay to preorder someplace, cancel the preorder, get your money back, go spend it on something else. I suspect FFG have already paid pretty dearly for that particular fizzle, but in the words of Bad Santa "they can't all be winners, now, can they?"

Seeing as these are FFG's forums, I would think they would monitor them. Maybe someone official will hop on and address it with this thread. Of course, I'm new here, and possibly being naive

Yeah, don't expect any official responses. Not even to rules questions.

FFG does not interact with their customers via forum - honestly, mods rarely even speak up when closing threads and the like. I believe we've had one developer post in the last year, and that was to notify us of an error in the FAQ. Even that was rare - the previous fixes were made without comment.

It's just not FFG's way.

Duke, I agree they're going to have to come out with something pretty sweet (or inexpensive) to grab back some of the market share on that one. I've got like six of the GF9 mats at this point and might have AP do a custom one for me sometime if it's not ridiculously expensive.

As someone pointed out, for every legitimate rules question or whatever they might answer, they would get 2,000 "when is this coming out, when is that coming out, how much is this other thing going to cost, you're stupid, natural male enhancement, I like turtles" questions coming out of the woodwork the minute someone stepped up and put a target, err FFG badge on. Hard to blame them for hesitating to open that can of worms.

Maybe. Any number of game companies manage to successfully interact on forums. There may be an argument for the scale of FFG presenting unique problems, but I'm not sure how compelling I find that.

Regardless, the point was less to bash their policy than to explain it, and crush any hopes that anyone might have had for such interaction :D

Oh I didn't think you were bashing it. And I wasn't trying to defend it, so much as explain what seems to be their point of view. I mean come on, how much do YOU enjoy interacting with us most of the time? :D Imagine instead of everyone simply throwing their hate at you, they were throwing their hate at you AND demanding answers from you - and then getting angry and rejecting them, naturally. ;)

CW, I agree.. and Buhallin is also right...

That said, if FFG had made a presence from the start, with some ground rules, this coupd be a very productive board.. not just us here railing and making crazy rules and upgrade ideas that break the game due to power mad players.. lol.. we could have some really good discussions with the designers and moderators on many subjects, and they could surprise us with some nice rumor mill kinds of things about upcoming releases.. I personally feel they desperately need a presence on these boards..

Edited by oneway

You know after looking at a ton of options for a cool game area, I am just going to use a black tablecloth...

With all kinds of terrain on and around it.

On top of everything else, it seems like the product as originally designed was 40 bucks worth of cardboard.

I have mixed feelings about it, to be honest.

On the one hand, I agree - done right, having a stable presence on the boards to settle some of the questions that arise could be a very valuable resource all around.

On the other hand, I know they couldn't pay me enough to be that guy. :D I wouldn't want to deal with some of the raving madmen on here. ;) Although it would be interesting to see what some of the 'twist the rules into a pretzel trying to make them work so I can interpret a specific rule in a way that I think would be cool' people would do if confronted with a flat out 'no, are you crazy?' from the developers.

Take it from me, as That Guy on another forum, "no, are you crazy?" really doesn't stop them.

On reflection, not answering questions on the forum and doing regular FAQ/Errata is far less confusing for everyone. Otherwise things can get very confused with webs of links from one thread to another with contradictory rulings... Gets mad very fast.

Saying that I wouldn't mind them announcing things on here in fresh thread and then taking no part in the the further discussion.

EG. We are releasing Large Ships here is a link to the Announcement.

or We have a new FAQ which can be downloaded here.
