Hi all, I was wondering if there was any news about this delayed product. It was taken off the upcoming page months ago. Since then, nothing but silence from the developers. Any known information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Starfield
I think it got a very bad reception, so went back to developement.

Oh? What was wrong with it? I hadn't heard.
i thought the actual pictures they were going to use looked good, and i liked the concept of "building" your own play area.
My initial concern was, "How do i keep the tiles from sliding apart while in the middle of a game?"
Edited by JohdoI think that was the major issue
From what I hear I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm sure they'll come up with a play area solution but yeah I think they weren't happy with how the tiles were turning out and went back to the drawing board.
they are late to the party I think. I didn't like the tiles sound of it, and I have seen and played on some nice mats
Great, I preordered a set along with 2 Imp Aces sets, the Rebel Transport, and the Tantive IV, and they won't ship until everything's available.
Aye, sliding apart and, I suspect, models sliding on 'em. Wee magnets and a rubbery material called for I reckon. It's a shame, cos I agree the pictures looked really good; I haven't seen any other solution that looks Star Warsy - they're always too full of brightly coloured planets and nebulae.
Edited by mazz0Well and keep in mind, they were double-sided. So it's not like they had a grippy back. BOTH sides were apparently smooth as ice, which meant yeah they slide on the table, models slide all over them... Bad times.
I agree they're a little late to the game now, and probably kicking themselves for going down a dead end like that. In fact it's a really surprising misstep from them, considering how popular and ubiquitous play mats of various sizes and designs are for everything from CCGs to miniature games. They definitely gave up some market share running down the wrong avenue on the play surface market, so hopefully their plan B is something pretty fantastic.
I was actually there when someone asked somebody who would know about the state of the starfield tile and when it would be out, and he made pretty clear that the tiles would be out the minute they perfected the technology to have a miniature Zamboni that could resurface the tiles between rounds. (Translation: they were as slick as ice, and the tiles are never, ever coming out.)

You may want to edit your order if possible. It sounds like this is going to be a long time coming.

Speaking of mats, where can I get a neoprene space mat that isn't garish like the coolstuffinc one?

I'd love to know!

Check out the "deep space" mat by gale force 9...it's nice.

here is a site where you can get images, the you could contact a local printer to have them make it for you.

Yeah, I am tempted with that, since there isn't going to be an official one for a while.

Agreed. If I remember correctly, they had some mats that were about the same price as the tiles, maybe I can do a straight swap.
The tiles also received a lot of flak because experienced gamers felt the tile seams could be used to estimate movement more easily. Mats do seem to be a better way to go. I don't think it would help me much, but enough people mentioned it independently that there must be something to it.

You can get some of these designs through the GripMat Kickstarter (but it's ending really soon, and their mat sizes are 24" wide maximum so you need to plan for 2 mats at 18"x36" for a standard play area).

I bought this one: http://www.miniaturemarket.com/hcd96669.html#.Us2NH2RdViU I like it better than the vinyl ones I've played on before.

I heard that one was only 35.5x35.5 though. In some games, that might make a difference.
The thing that baffles me most about this is that they've done similar products for Wings of War back when they had it, and they were exactly what everyone wants. No idea why they felt the need to get all inventive with it, but it obviously wasn't a good choice.
Yeah, I don't know. They clearly decided to think outside the box on this one, and it sounds like it was a pretty serious fiasco. I can't imagine that they didn't sink a lot of wasted time and money into development on that, as well. Maybe they thought a modular tile system that you could break down and throw in a gaming bag would be easier to transport around than a 3' long rolled up tube.

Yup, 'tis true, they cheated a half an inch both sides.
