For Those of You Who Have Painted the Millenium Falcon...

By OldScribe2000, in X-Wing

Using a popular YouTube video as a guide, I washed my Millennium Falcon. I didn't want that dirty, ultra-gritty look that the artist used on his, so I used a much lighter wash on mine. The artist warned potential painters not to allow the wash to "pool" anywhere on the ship's fuselage. That was good advice because I accidentally allowed it to happen on mine.

Of course, this leaves a wash behind that looks like a stain, or a spilled drink, once it's dried. Because of the Falcon's shape, I tended to get pools on the top outside edges, and I don't like the way it looks. The overall effect of the dark wash looks awesome, but I need to do something about those stains.

I'm considering finding a grey color that matches the Falcon and painting and then washing these sections over again. But I'm scared I may screw it up even worse. A few friends have pointed out that the Falcon is essentially a bucket (echoing the sentiments of Leia in the movies). These friends say the fuselage is a jigsaw puzzle of multicolored panels. One section even has bullet holes stitched across it. Therefore, many say leave it alone. Just spray on a matte coat. That's it. They say these dried pools of wash don't stand out on the Falcon.

What do you think?

Was there meant to be a photo?

I don't see an issue with it looking dirty, but depends how the wash has pooled.

photo to see?

But it could just have flow through a tree thats why one part if more dirty then the rest :P

No, the "damage" is too minimal and my camera is too weak to take helpful photos. Basically, it looks like a black raindrop fell and dried on the Falcon's hull. It's not terribly noticeable, but it's still a flaw.

If I could find some grey paint that matched 100%, I'd blot these splotches out and re-wash (being more cautious this time). Right now, it seems no one notices the flaws but me--miniature painters will understand that statement.

I'd recomend, either just repainting the area and then spot wash it, or repaint the panal, and then wash it. The differing color patch could be easy to explain as repained areas.. but in the long run, if no one notices until you point it out, I wouldn't worry about it. It's not a painting contest after all.. I feel you on the 'I know it's there' aspect, but I have learned to get beyond that these days.. lol

I painted my YT-1300 completely rusted and corroded as if it was just dug out of a scrapyard. I like using it with the Smuggler because it makes more sense with the diminished attack ability and hit points. I don't have a way to post a pic of it though..

[EDIT]

Nevermind. I got it. This is what it looked like before I went "rust-happy":

I posted pics of mine a short while back, a search would find it.. if I get ambitious I might look for it.. lol.. I agree that the old look is a good one for the YT..

To post anpicture you just need to up load it to a site like photobucket, and then link to your post.. it's easy to do..

Sorry, I didn't mean to post 3 times for 3 pictures...

Personally, I think it looks just fine. Can't tell where the wash pooled up.

I never followed up on it with a wash. I only used a dark dry-brushing over most of the rust and corrosion, so the rust around the "metal" is brought out more. The Citadel "Corrosion" FX paint has a fine-grit sand in it, so use a brush that isn't expensive...Especially when you dry-brush over it. It basically turns the effected area into sand paper...The rust was tricky, because its a jelly-type paint and will come out as orange paint if you don't apply it right. I had to practice on a paper towel until I got the desired effect. You'll have to use a dabbing technique after wiping most of it off the brush. Using the rust color on top of the corrosion gives you the effect from the pictures above.

I just realized that you had me confused with OldScribe2000.
