Your Favorite Combo?

By newmagrathea, in X-Wing

What is your single favorite ship/pilot with upgrades per side. This is meant more as your go to combo that shows up in several of your squads.

I know, I know it's hard to pick just one and it changes.

I'll start. Lately it's been:

Imperials - Soontir Fel/TIE Interceptor with push the limit and stealth device.

Rebels - Ibtisam/B-Wing with Advanced Sensors, Push the Limit, and Engine Upgrade

Imperials - Omicron Group Pilot + FCS + Gunner + Engine Upgrade (A surprise to exactly no one)

Rebels - Ibtisam + Advanced Sensors + Engine Upgrade + Push The Limit

Captain Jonus and three more TIE bomber with concussion missiles and cluster missiles.

I have been running Soontir with Elusivness

I love that 2 of you have so far mentioned my Stupidly-mobile Ibtisam. That makes me happy inside.

I'd also like to add SableGryphon's Blockade (ORS + Navigator + Int. Agent + APL), and 666 Actions (Kyle + Garven + "Dutch") to the rebel side.

On the Imperial side, I'd like to throw out SableGryphon's Cow as my favorite, followed by a Stupidly-mobile Darth Vader (DV + Engine Upgrade + Daredevil) and Jonus alongside 2x HLC (one must be on a shuttle)

Rebel: Wedge R2D2 shield upgrade. He has got to be blown up, but **** he's shot many of my fighters so far...

Imperial: Soontir PTL+stealth. This guy single handedly killed a Falcon once whilst being outnumbered.

Kyle+ recon spec. + Moldy crow + blaster turret.

Fell + PTL.

Tycho + Daredevil :)

Seems like Ibtisam + advanced sensors + push the limit + engine upgrade is pretty popular for the rebels. Funny thing is Prototype pilot with stealth device almost beat it out for me. I use that combo to fill out a list with an extra ship for 20pts, it's fast and hard to hit, makes a great distraction.

That's a great list. You should swap out Concussion Missiles for Proton Torpedoes though. They have the exact same hit chances without a focus, but you get an extra critical hit with the Torpedo.

I always like running Kath with adrenaline rush, recon specialist, and proton bombs. Turn 2 k-turns throw a lot of people off.

Lately I've been running black squadron pilots with vet instincts in a ps6 swarm. Crazy deadly.

I rather like the Wave 3 version of Han Shoots first:

Han Solo

Millenium Falcon

Push the Limit

Recon Specialist

Gunner

2x Rookies

Han can double focus + evade each round. It's slightly more versatile than the old version that used Marksmanship with Gunner, since you can potentially use focus on defense. Using evade twice is equivalent to Chewie.

Concussion missiles have more blank sides that focus, so I am pretty sure that Concussion Missiles have a better chance of hitting. The extra crit is great against Imps, but against rebels (Which I am usually fighting) their shields protect them from the crit. This is not as big a deal, but concussion missiles have a much better chance of hitting if you also have a focus (which my TIE Bombers usually don't).

Howlrunner + something else :P

Na I love to play a green squadron with PTL, it is just such an nuisance for others to deal with them, especially when I am skill rolling dice. ;)

"Concussion Missiles have more blank sides that focus" - what does that even mean? Dice have sides. Cards have effects.

Attack dice have 8 sides:

2 blanks

2 focus

3 hits

1 crit

If you don't have a focus when you fire a missile, then Concussion Missile and Proton Torpedo have the same exact hit distribution. The only difference is that Proton Torpedo has 2 sides out of 8 that can get turned into a critical hit, and Concussion Missile has 2 sides out of 8 that can get turned into a hit.

If you can action stack, then obviously Concussion Missiles get more hits. They are a favorite of mine with PtL.

FYI the exact numbers are:

0 hits 1 hit 2 hits 3 hits 4 hits

0.3906% 8.98% 31.25% 40.625% 18.75% Concussion Missile / Proton Torpedo = 2.68 avg

0% 0.39% 4.7% 21.1% 73.8% Concussion Missile w/ focus = 3.68 avg

0.0244% 1.83% 10.5% 35.3% 52.3% Jonus + Concussion Missile / Proton Torpedo = 3.38 avg

0% 0.0244% 0.44% 7.25% 92.3% Jonus + Concussion Missile + Focus = 3.918 avg

Attack dice have 2 blanks and 2 focuses. Concussions are better if you can Focus on the turn you spend it, but otherwise Proton Torpedoes are better 'cause of the Crit.

Back on-topic: I will second Howlrunner + lots of attack dice.

It's obvious and has been used since the beginning of the game, but it's still the best combo in the game. She has, almost undeniably, the best pilot ability in the game, and single handedly makes TIE swarms work really well.

My favorite right now is Ibtisam + Fire Control System + Engine Upgrade + Heavy Laser Cannon. She's a monster.

Green Squadron + Push the Limit + Homing missile.

Nothing spot kills enemy ships like a pair of homing missiles up the tail pipe (Can't tell you how many howlrunners I've killed on turn 2 with a homing missile). If you really need to save on points, you can drop the homing to a concussion, but watch out for enemy ships with the evade action.

One of my favorite combos is my "Super Luke":

Luke Skywalker w/Vet Instincts, R2-D2 & Shield

I've had a couple of games where he was the last ship left against 3-4 Imps and have won the game with Luke undamaged at the end and the Imps dead.

Black Squadron pilots with Veteran Instincts sounds cool.

I'm not convinced on Elusiveness; gaining a stress token to force you to reroll an attack is nice but using Push the Limit to pull Focus + Evade just seems better to me. If someone's had experience with elusiveness, let me know how it went...

My favourite is Black Squadron with Opportunist. It's not devastating, but it effectively adds an extra "gain an extra attack die" black squadron character in addition to Mithel and Backstabber. I'm a big fan of basic TIEs, albeit I like sticking to a single squadron (Academy, or Obsidian, or Black) rather than the classic mix of Howlrunner with academy pilots...

Would quite like to try opportunist on other things, too. I can't help notice that unlike most abilities, it's NOT limited to primary weapon attacks. Extra dice with torpedoes, missiles or heavy laser cannons is a potentially scary prospect...

My absolute favorite combo is Super Fel. As previously mentioned, but contains two cards from the Imperial Aces expansion: Royal Guard TIE and Targeting Computer. Super Fel might cost 35 points, but he can easily end your opponent's winning streak himself. I was playing a 200 v 200 2v2 game, and my squad contained SuperFel. He and a potshot from my space bison aced Wedge in the first round of combat, where I flew PAST the opposing squadrons and turned to meet Wedge, I had a lovely shot and he had no eyes on target. Soontir proceeded to finish Wedge, Luke, a rookie, Dutch, and a Grey Squadron BY HIMSELF. 3 Ion cannon shots per round (both Y's and Horton also had Ion Cannons) couldn't touch evade/2xfocus/stealthed soontir, and neither X-wing ever got a shot at him.

PS6 swarm is a great way to beat Bloody Daggers, as i showed someone on vassal the other night.

One that I'm starting to like more and more is the following as a start:

Jan

-Squad Leader

-Ion

-Nien

Biggs

-R2F2

Jan keeps Biggs alive a whole lot longer if you pass a focus action to him and ups the firepower for the whole squad. Flavor the rest of the squad to taste (including upgrade like putting Stealth on Biggs).

Super Fel is a great ship, but I wonder if you would love him so much if you were playing in a 100 point game and he cost more than a third of all your points.

(That being said one of the great things about TIEs is that you can still get a lot of ships even if one is really expensive.)
