It actually worked pretty good, The HWK's were ignored at the beginning and they slowly picked ships apart with the turrets.

I made several that all have a minimum number of points dumped into the HWKs, so one of them might accidentally turn out to be semi-OK.

Yup. Compare Carnor Jax, who shuts down the turret even if it's wanting to shoot at someone else.
In fairness, the blaster turret is about the only thing I can think of where that applies - other than just normal 'focus-becomes-hits'.
