Squad Building Challenge - The double HWK project

By The_Brown_Bomber, in X-Wing

Build a 100pt squad that has at least TWO HWK-290's.

At least one pilot has to be a name pilot.

Not really feasible with one of them being named. Two hawks can work at 100 points but they need to be pretty bared boned. If you force one of them to be named also, you will end up with so little to spend on ships that actually do damage that the list will be very noncompetitive. At which point take what you want with the remaining points because you're unlikely to win any games against reasonable players with reasonable lists.

That's why it's called a "challenge." And besides, that all is irrelevant. Brown Bomber didn't say to make it competitive, I imagine his goal was to see what sort of creative lists and uses for the HWK that people could come up with.

Speaking of which, I will respectfully bow out of this challenge, as I just barely got my first HWK and haven't played with it yet.

Ive been very impressed with the HWK-290, id written it off as too weak for some time but when u see it working in squads it definitely grows on you. At least it did for me. The Blaster Turret is actually pretty good - i think of it like an improved ion turret designed specifically for a focus generating ship (Moldy Crow title and/or Recon Specialist assists the Blaster Turret nicely).

Yes Hero - thats it exactly! just interested to see some ways to use it other than 5x rebel operatives :)

Horton Salm- Blaster Turret, R2 Unit, Proton Torpedo x2

Jan Ors- Nien Nunb, Ion Turret

Kyle Katarn- Recon Specialist, Moldy Crow, Blaster Turret

Could easily switch out torpedoes for Shield Upgrades, but what's the fun in that? :D

nice touch with Nien Nunb as crew, i see what ur thnking there. I have also seen Chewbacca crew on a few lists as he is essentially two extra shields for 4pts :)

I've never used a HWK-290 before, but what the hell, I'll give it a try.

Rebel Operative w/ Blaster Turret, Recon Specialist

Challenge accepted. The HWK is extremely underrated and underestimated. It's a nasty contender.

Here's the List:

-----

Rebel Operative (17)
HWK-290 (16), Intelligence Agent (1)
Roark Garnet (24)
HWK-290 (19), Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Green Squadron Pilot (21)
A-Wing (19), Swarm Tactics (2)
Green Squadron Pilot (21)
A-Wing (19), Swarm Tactics (2)
Prototype Pilot (17)
-----
And Here's some strategy:
Roark is you Focal Point. keep him beyond range 3 of the Enemy. skirt the map.
the Rebel Op w/ the Agent is your blocker. Keep him around range 2 of Roark and use the Intel Agent to block the most dangerous target heading towards Roark.
Keep at least 1 GSP within range 3 of Roark. the A's with Swarm cascade Roark's Ability to boost PS12. So they should always be shooting first.
Why Ion on Roark if you're only skirting the board? If they break your perimeter hopefully the Ion keeps them down long enough for your A-Wings or your blocker to help you out.
Or if you're really lucky or are using loaded dice they'll fly Ionized out of the combat zone.

Anyways.... Good Luck and Good hunting ;)

Let's go hardcore!

Actually, I just thought about my list, and I'll strike off the R2 from Horton to give Kyle Veteran Instincts. That way, all three of them are PS8 and Kyle can use his ability -before- Horton fires.

You know Kyle uses his ability at the start of the combat phase, right?

So, I went Hard Mode and took all three named HWK pilots:

Roark Garnet (19)
Blaster Turret (4)
Chewbacca (4)

Kyle Katarn (21)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)
Shield Upgrade (4)
Moldy Crow (3)

Jan Ors (25)
Swarm Tactics (2)
Blaster Turret (4)
Nien Nunb (1)
Shield Upgrade (4)

Total: 100

Now, here's how it works. You start out slow, with Kyle building up as many focus tokens as possible. When the enemy gets in range, each HWK will focus if able, but Kyle will hand out focus tokens if needed. When combat phase starts, Roark will give one of the other two characters a PS12, who will then trigger Swarm Tactics to give it to the other non-Roark, who will then give it back to Roark. All three will then fire at PS12. If all three have focus, Kyle will pass an extra focus token to Roark, and Jan will increase his blaster turret to 4 dice, so he'll have a focus to spend on that attack.

Queue JFitz's List:

Kyle Katarn (21)
Determination (1)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)
Moldy Crow (3)
Rebel Operative (16)
Blaster Turret (4)
Recon Specialist (3)
Lando Calrissian (44)
Nien Nunb (1)
Total: 100
You basically always have a 360* firing arc and all your ships should be able to have Focus/TL assuming Kyle stockpiles his focus a bit when he can and you use Lando as much as possible. Can put out good consistent damage. It has it weaknesses, but is one of the more competitive 2 HWK lists I've seen.

Ibtisam + Fire Control System + Engine Upgrade + Push the Limit (37)

Some people prefer Advanced Sensors to FCS. I prefer FCS, especially because it gives you one more free action, while AdvSen does not.

Kyle Katarn + Adrenaline Rush (22)

Adrenaline Rush helps Kyle keep up with Ibtisam so he can keep feeding her focuses.

Roark Garnet (19)

Makes Ibtisam shoot before everyone else.

Rookie Pilot + R2 Astromech (22)

R2 because I had an extra point. You could drop this to swap FCS for Advanced Sensors on Ibtisam, but that would be counter to this squad's objective: action economy for Ibtisam.

This squad is about Ibtisam using as many actions as possible and blowing away her target before anything gets a chance to shoot. Keep the HWKs following with the B-Wing as best they can to buff Ibtisam. Send the X-Wing up the other side of the play area to split the enemy force or get behind them.

I really don't think this is at all competitive, but it would be interesting to try.

I also really don't think more than one HWK is meant to be in a squad, unless you're doing some crazy HWK swarm.

That.....could REALLY work. Even if it didn't work out, the look on your opponent's face would be priceless

Until you can't shoot at Dark Curse, who then slowly takes apart all 3 HWKs.

I still don't think that Dark Curse neutralizes a Blaster Turret. Carnor Jax does, though.

Until you can't shoot at Dark Curse, who then slowly takes apart all 3 HWKs.

That brings up a valid question. Can the blaster turret just flat out not be used against him?

I believe It means you cannot spend focus to adjust your rolls.

Although IF it was cannot spend at all... IT would also negate Deadeye if you have Deadeye + torpedo or Missile...

At 16 points, that would definitely be broken. I would think that the attack doesn't start until the shot is fired, since the focus in question is required to fire the shot, it can be used.

From the FAQ, page 4

"Q: Can “Dark Curse” be the target of a secondary weapon attack that requires the attacker to spend a focus token?
A: No."

Thanks, very good to know. He's quite a monster
