and she loves the game so far. She doesn't even like Star Wars (she likes Star Trek, though) but she's really digging this game. She's even considering going to a tourney with me on the 30th. I'm starting to think she may be a witch though, her rolls are a little too good.
Teaching my wife to play
If she likes this game, then you will have to get her Assault Wing. She is doing you a favour getting into something you like, and since she likes the game, then it's fair you play with her with Star Trek, so she can enjoy something she likes.
NOooooo.
Ok, maybe the Star Trek based Assault Wing and X-Wing are based on similar rules but don't cross the streams. There are similarities but also so many differences. Perhaps the worst thing is that if you get her into the Star Trek game you're going to lose the Star Wars game.
my wife and i play this game every thursday night that we can make it to at our local playgroup
she only really got into it because she loves star wars and board games. so this is probably the only table top game she will ever play

Sod it, that'd get me interested if I wasn't already!
Ponies on the fantasy flight forums. I'm quite happy.

Does she like games at all? I mean if it is "Sci-Fi" that is all of her problem this game would play almost identically if you said they were WWII fighters instead.
Key things when teaching another to play: don't make things hard on them but don't coddle them either. I really like the Secret Plans idea that starts teaching with 50 point squads were you give the newbie Chewbacca + Gunner + ??? and fly TIEs against it. They ignore crits dealt to them, they don't worry if you are in the firing arc or not, if their attack misses they can try again, and it really isn't all that action dependent so bad flying shouldn't ruin everything. If you want to win against that using TIEs you're really going to demonstrate the hard stuff.

I painted nyan cat on a firespray and care bears on my ties. That didn't work. Now I just get laughed at during tourneys, till I whoop their a$$e$. Just wait till that happens. I'll show them. I'll shove Rainbow Bright down their throats.

Don't think I haven't considered it. I'm one of those heretics that likes both Star Trek and Star Wars, so I wouldn't mind playing both. Plus there seem to be more Attack Wing players in my vicinity than X-wing players. I know they are 2 different animals, so that would probably keep it interesting too. I've mentioned Attack Wing's existance to her, and she seems intrigued. We'll probably pop on Youtube one evening and watch some battle reports to see if we want to try to do both. Personally, I think I'd rather pick one and stick with it so we can afford to have a larger fleet for the game.

"Have you ever wanted to shoot me in the face? This game lets you do that!"
thanks for the wife play ideas. she is kinda crafty, so maybe i will give her a few TIE's to paint up.
I'd say the crux of the game is more about the strategy and tactics than it is about sci-fi.
Does your wife play chess or go or anything like that?
Maybe just ask her to try a game or two with that recommended Chewie + Gunner vs TIEs setup, and see what she thinks!

If she turns you into a newt, that's a dead giveaway.

While True there's a slight Issue with it... once turned into a Newt by your Witch Wife or Girlfriend you usually don't have any recollection of being Newt-ified... once you've been turned back

Anyone know where I can get my hands on a large balance scale and a duck?
My wife does not like anything Si-Fi. any advice on getting her interested in the game?
My advice—tell her plainly what it would mean to you if she'd consider giving it a try.
When you get ready for bed you could claim you have a headache due to lack of X-Wing games. That might work.
My girlfriend likes sci-fi and takes a casual enjoyment of Star Wars. I'd say she falls between 'respecting' and 'putting up' with my lifelong obsession and scholarly devotion to it, but Fantasy Flight has made 2013 a very Star Wars-packed year and I'm sure my gaming interests seemed less silly when they had more variety. This is the same girl who has beaten more of the Assassin's Creed games than I have so I'm not exactly afraid to be nerdy with her.
She really likes board games in general and will play all sorts of games with me, yet X-Wing Miniatures is the sole exception (at least until I try getting back into Warhammer 40k, I know she wouldn't put up with that).
What gets me is she wont even try it. She says X-Wing doesn't look interesting from the times she's seen me play and it's too much of a traditional war game for her. I think if she at least gave a 30 or 40-point skirmish a chance it'd appeal to her instinctive love of zooming toys around going 'pew pew pew' as much as it does for me.

I don't wanna' be a jerk but... You know that actually is a pretty valid question.
I can't imagine marrying someone that I can't share my strongest interests with.
