New Player, First real list

By The Imperial Rebel, in X-Wing

Hey i'm a new player experimenting with a few lists on the squad builder site, trying decide what expansions to buy (ATM I have 2 core sets plus a X-wing and Tie-Advanced on the way) today when scrollin g on the Y-wing topic i came across Englishpete's post, for his 2 Y-wing 2 HWK-290 squad. I was especially fascinated how he set up his HWK-290's. One tweak lead to another and i found myself with this squad!

Kyle Katarn + Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist + Moldy Crow + Shield Upgrade (35)

Luke Skywalker + R2-D2 (32)

Wedge Antilles + R5-D8 + Determination (33)

I know that i would have to buy the Y-wing & Falcon to complete this list (R5-D8 & Shield Upgrade) but i could make a few changes until then. I also could switch Determination and Blaster Turret for Ion Cannon Turret if that would suit better but personally i like the original.

So please tell me what you think of this list, it's flaws and it's strengths.

Thanks again Englishpete for the base for my squad!

pretty solid list

suggestions

* put the shield upgrade on Luke or Wedge (Wedge will likely be their primary target)

* change R5D8 for R2 astromech on Wedge (shedding stress more easily esp of a 2 sharp turn is really useful)

* change determination to Kyle Katarn

what other upgrades do u have?

Right now not much but i'm looking to expand. Also i put R5D8 on Wedge so with determination he could regain even more health (Being that R5D8 can only change face down cards and determination has the quarter chance of discarding the card) and i can keep wedge alive for a extended period of time.

Also i don't particularly want to buy the Y-wing expansion, personally if someone offered you maybe $2 for one of your spare R5D8 cards would you take it? (Being that R5D8 is unique)

On Wegde, for the same points, you would be far better off with taking Push the Limit and the standard R2 astromech.

Edit: PtL only comes with the A-wing. PtL is also one of the golden upgrades that makes its way into a lot of competitive squads.

Ok, thanks but i don't think the A-wing is my priority ATM i have my eye on the HWK, B-wing, Falcon and Tie (I think in that order)

Also PTL will only give wedge another Focus which could easily be given to him by the HWK without giving stress so i don't think it would be worth it in this instance.

Actually double focus on wedge is pretty good - one for attack and one for defense or both for defense. (yes both for defense - your opponent will make him a priority target and throw multiple enemies at him)

to use R5D8 is an action, not something u have the luxury of taking in the heat of battle unless you have Push the Limit on him. Yes i know Kyle can give wedge a free focus but trust me - he will need it for defense most of the time.

dont worry about giving wedge stress - you will need to play him aggressively at times and at times keep him stressed for consecutive turns and when he is stressed ur R5D8 is unusable - on the flip side if you are planning to keep wedge stress free then u r actually denying wedge of aggressive flying options. In

iv tested Expert Handling on wedge and although it is really handy it is an action which hurts a pilot like wedge who needs that focus for defense and attack.

Summary: R5D8 is situational and restricts your movement options versus R2 Astromech which is a free action and helps shed stress more easily.

Another option would be R2F2 instead of R5D8, especially if you run PtL on Wedge. Biggs as a bodyguard for him is also good, or Garven to keep Focus' up. Either of those instead of Luke will also free up a few points. R2D2 on Biggs, Shield Upgrades on both x-wings? Here's a couple of suggested squads:

Wedge +R2F2+PtL (35)

Biggs +R2D2+Shield Upgrade (33)

Kyle +Blaster Turret+Recon Spec+Moldy Crow (31)

Still has 1 pt left for an EPT for Kyle, Vet Instincts maybe? And now that I think about it R2F2's points might be better spent if Biggs is bodyguarding Wedge, torpedo for Wedge?.

Or this one:

Kyle +Blaster Turret+Recon Spec+Moldy Crow (31)

Wedge +R2F2+PtL+Shield Upgrade (39)

Garven +Shield Upgrade (30)

If you want to run R2F2, R2D2, Biggs, and Wedge w/ PtL then you should run the F2 on Biggs and D2 on Wedge.

With PtL you're going to want to do the occasion Green to shed the stress and that also lets R2D2 repair the shields at the same time. Besides, you want them shooting at Biggs and here giving Biggs the extra evasion die can mean he avoids more damage while Wedge is dealing damage.

The reason you generally want PtL on Wedge is so that he can TL/Focus all by himself. If you throw on R2F2 then he would need an action to use that droid (and the Focus would help there) which reduces his offense which is why you use him. If you want to be "crazy" with the PtL Wedge you can give him an Engine Upgrade to allow him to Boost into firing positions or out of firing arcs just like those pesky Interceptors like doing. Of course the basic R2 is the other popular Astromech to run with PtL as it puts a lot more green maneuvers on the dial.

For 1 point I'd consider Determination on Kyle. You really don't want to risk him losing things if you can avoid it.

I would consider dropping one of your X-Wing pilots for Garven Dreis. He would be able to pass a focus back to Kyle after firing. If Kyle's in the Moldy Crow, this means that the Focus Token never actually gets lost!

I had another idea for a list dropping wedge for Ten Numb

Luke + R2D2 (32)

Ten Numb + Fire Control System + Proton Torpedoes (37)

Kyle Katarn + Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist + Moldy Crow (31)

Now in this set up i would be buying the B-wing and HWK-290, making my collection those + 2 core sets + Tie-Adv + X-wing.

What do you guys think?

NOTE: i would rather of Senor Jammer on Ten Numb but i don't plan on buying the shuttle soon, yes i realize it's a good investment for not only the upgrade cards but the ship itself. But it's not at the top of my list ATM.

Rebel {scum}!

You are welcome to try your luck out there, but we'll be here when you come around. We've a nice shiny new tie fighter with your designation on it. Plus, we won't freak out when you get angry, swear vengeance, and fly aggressively.

something like this squad might be worth considering...

Garven Dreis (26)

Rookie Pilot (21)

Blue Squadron Pilot (22)

Kyle Katarn/Blaster Turret/Moldy Crow/Recon Specialist

Garven and Kyle complement each other very well. With Garvens ability to pass a focus you might even consider dropping moldy crow title or recon specialist and use those 3 pts to switch Rookie Pilot for another B-Wing or put R2 Astromechs on Garven + Rookie
