where to begin for fleetbuilding

By Thecactuar, in X-Wing

I'm very new to the game as of Christmas but the few times i've played i loved it and really want to get into the more into the game.

My problem is I think I have too much to really know where to start. I'd like to start making some 100 point builds that aren't terrible. Does anyone have any suggested fleets for me to try out to start figuring things out a bit.

I would assume I'd be able to make some decent Falcon with wingmen or Firespray with wingmen. Most of the builds i've seen require multiples of the same ships(awings, bwings) the only ships I currently have multiples of are 5 ties and 3 xwings.

I have the following ships

5 - TIE

1 - Advanced

1 - Bomber

1 - Interceptor

1 - Firespray

3 - Xwing

1 - Ywing

1 - Bwing

1 - Awing

1 - HWK

1 - Falcon

Here's a few builds you can manage:

46 Han Solo

+4 Gunner

+3 Marksmanship

+1 Millenium Falcon

23 Red Squadron Pilot x 2

---

36 Krassis Trelix

+7 Heavy Laser Cannon

18 "Howlrunner"

+3 Stealth Device

12 Academy Pilot x 3

---

23 "Dutch" Vander

+5 Ion Cannon Turret

+1 R2 Astromech

21 Kyle Katarn

+4 Blaster Turret

+3 Moldy Crow

+1 Nien Nunb

21 Rookie Pilot x 2

I would recommend using a squadron builder, there are several online. They will help you see pattern in the cards, upgrades that work better with certain pilots/ships, ships that work better together, etc. The one that I use is Squadron Builder , I've found it to have the best interface, but there are several others.

You have a great assortment of ships to start building from. While you can get many suggestions just throwing things together is the best way of doing things.

The reason you see a lot of squads with multiples of the same ship is simply to make them easier to run continually. The idea here is simply that if everything handles the same, and perhaps even at the same time, it is far easier to get them to work. Your five TIE Fighters may not be enough to run those 6-8 T/F swarms but it is certainly enough for a "swarm" to train with while they support, or are supported by, another ship or two. If you try formation flying you'll learn that making turns and such is often easier when you have some freedom deciding who to move first; if you have ships of different skill you lose that freedom.

If it matters what you have is basically all I have except I have the Shuttle, a second Bomber (and may get another), and am currently waiting on the Y-Wing. I may not be able to build using multiples of most ships but I do NOT let that hinder me.

One thing I started doing a while back was to keep a list of various squads. When someone posts an interesting squad that I'd like to try, I copy and paste it into my list. I have about seven pages worth for both sides now, that I keep in my rule binders. It makes it very easy to set up a squad when its time to play.
