X-Wings the best 3

By zhentil, in X-Wing

Now, I am relatively new to this game and I have seen quite a few builds with 3 X-Wings. Now the best 3 in my opinion are Biggs, Luke and Wedge, now with just those guys you are about 18 points left to use. Now with Luke of course you use R2-D2 which is only 4 points and now you have 14 points left. Which mods are the best to use with these guys.

1. Luke R2-D2

2. Wedge

3. Biggs

Give Luke "draw their fire". This greatly improves the survivability of the fleet entire, as he's already the toughest to kill. It essentially means that every crit thrown at you will hit one of Luke's regenerating shields, unless they decide to focus-fire a ship with Firesprayesque survivability.

3x Torps and PTL fill out the remaining points.

*Edit: Fixed a misspelling. Also adding the following paragraph.

3x Engine Upgrades would also be awesome. It's an offensive (getting into Range 1, getting into firing positions when otherwise unavailable), defensive (getting into a farther range when being attacked, getting out of arc), and thematic (staying in formation) upgrade.

a proven package of upgrades on Luke is R2D2 + Shield Upgrade + Draw Their Fire. As long as u keep him close to a friendly ship that ally will be crit proof :)

my favourite mix of upgrades on wedge is Engine Upgrade + Push the Limit + R2 astromech

as for Biggs - there are two schools of thought here - use minimal upgrades or go nuts with Stealth Device + R2F2 + Shield Upgrade (the dilemma u face is he is going to die anyway so do you really want to put more points into him?)

(the dilemma u face is he is going to die anyway so do you really want to put more points into him?)

Myself I'm of the opinion that a Biggs that only lasts a round or 2 isn't really worth the points. He's going to die, but the goal is to keep him alive long enough to do some serious damage with Wedge and Luke before he dies.

As a baseline I would start with:

95 points

Wedge + R2 + PtL

Luke + R2D2 + Draw Their fire + Shield Upgrade

Biggs

Engine Upgrade is great on Wedge when he has R2 + PtL, he can really zip around the map and get range 1 shots on his targets. Luke is a tank. Biggs needs to stay alive, so keep him in the back but still in range 1 of Luke + Wedge. Use Draw Their Fire on Luke as much as you can, and regen his shields with green moves.

It's all about flying it effectively though. :)

I've had reasonable success with this build:

Wedge Antilles (32)

X-Wing (29), R2 Astromech (1), Swarm Tactics (2)

Biggs Darklighter (31)

X-Wing (25), R2-F2 (3), Stealth Device (3)

Luke Skywalker (37)

X-Wing (28), R2-D2 (4), Draw Their Fire (1), Shield Upgrade (4)

It's 100 points exactly.

I do my best to keep Biggs at range 3 (5 defense dice). and Swarm Tactics so Wedge pass his pilot skill to Luke. or Biggs if he manages to have someone in his firing Arc.

I also on occasion swap out Swarm Tactics for Squad Leader so Biggs can use R2-F2 and Focus.

My Yavin heros list is

Wedge

-R5

Luke

-R2-D2

-Shield Upgrade

-Draw their Fire

Biggs

-R2-F2

-Shield Upgrade

It is hard to kill.

Why give Swarm Tactics to Wedge to give to Luke? His pilot skill makes it likely he'll be firing before the enemy anyway.

Otherwise, totally agree with the R2-D2 + Shield Upgrade combination, though it works for any X-wing and not just Luke. Luke can also have Elusiveness which combined with his defensive ability will make him a slippery one.

On the basis that you'll have Biggs in the back, I'd give him proton torpedoes.

Wedge can use Squad Leader to help Biggs maximise the torpedoes and to give focus to other ships that might be stressed (like Luke).

preferably Swarm Tactics will be given from Wedge to Biggs. but there have been occasions when I move Biggs that he doesn't always have something to shoot at but is still within "cover range".

Swarm Wedge to Luke is beneficial when facing other level 8 or 9 pilots. Luke gets to hit the 8's first or the 9's at the same time.

Arguably Wedge with Leader is better than Wedge with Swarm. But If the opponent keeps there forces staggered back like I would with Biggs. They'll be taking range 3's at Wedge which means Using the Leader action to give focus or target lock to Luke or Biggs is marginally less beneficial than just using focus for Wedge to ensure those range 3 shots at him are easier dodged.

Wedge is the Deadliest offensive unit in this formation. and he's got worst defensive options of the 3 so he's the easiest to target IF they're taking shots at range 3 beyond the Biggs' cover save.
