overlapping question.

By oneway, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, last night while showing a couple people how to play the game, I ran into a situation I hadn't seen before. While moving my Firespray, I decided to streach the move (fettigator build) in so doing I would have overlapped one of my opposung players ships, and in the process of sliding back, I wouod have overlapped another ship behind me.. that was where I wasn't sure what to do.. so I decided to go with a different move to avoid the situation altogether.

So my question is.. had I decided to make that move, how shoupd I have done it, and figure the overlap situation..

Sorry if that reads confusingly .. lol.. best way I could explain it really..

With an overlap situation, you start at your end move and work your way back to the first available position that allows you to place your base on the play surface, even if it becomes your starting space and you don't end up moving.

In the above scenario, you would have moved back from your first overlap, and then continued moving back from the second overlap until you either found a free spot to place your base touching the second overlap or ended up in your starting position.

I hope that helps.

I should add then that the second ship would be the one you are considered touching. You would be able to shoot and be shot by the further ship.

Cool.. I thought that might be the right answer.. but couldn't be sure..

Thanks guys.. appreciate it..

I'll just add that in the case of Fettigator once you've settled on your maneuver (and whatever indicates your done with speed and direction) you should NOT be able to go back and change things just because you now find yourself in an overlap situation. Had you looked at the board and said to yourself "I'm not going to make that," before pickup of the maneuver template that is one thing but if you've picked up your template and then set it down to measure your Move only to discover the overlaps then you need to do that maneuver.

Note though as a side note that you can't boost or barrel roll into an overlap in a similar situation.

StevenO.. you are correct.. While I was eyeballing my move i figured I would end up in this situation, and after that chose my move.. The new player was curious to see what would have actually happened so we looked at both moves.

I guess my verbiage in the OP suggests what you mention.. but I hadn't grabbed a template until I had actually made the decision.. I guess I could have worded it better..

Edited by oneway

Figured it should be pointed out. This game is a bit strict about doing ANY kinds of measuring without a specific reason and if you could effectively use movement templates to plan your move then something is wrong.

As a learning experience it may be fine and even helpful but from a rules perspective should be avoided.

Agreed.. it is one of the things I discussed with my new players and made sure they knew that it wasn't allowed.. lol.. I did give them some pointers on how to guesstimate movement so they can plot their moves.. they all did very well and enjoyed the game emensly.
