Recreating the 181st

By Grudge, in X-Wing

I've always liked this unit (used to play Rogue Squadron as a kid), and I wanted to re-create a formation, now that I could.

Soontir Fel + Expert Handling

"Fel's Wrath"

Turr Phennir + Veteran Instincts

Sabre Squadron Pilot + Draw Their Fire

In terms of effectiveness, I'd like to keep them all together, but keeping true to the back-story, Fel and Wrath will travel together, while Phennir and his wing-man take another approach. I think Fel is pretty crummy, compared to a normal Sabre Squadron Pilot, but oh well.

What do you all think? In terms of effectiveness on the table (I think both Fel and Phennir will be survivable with their skills and pilot talents) and also in recreating the 181st. :)

Grudge,

I have run Soontir Fel and "Fel's Wrath" as wingmen (I have never played the video games but the pair seemed to go together for some strange reason) and found them to be quite effective, not necessarily because their abilities synchronize but because they are just good pilots in an outstanding craft.

I have also run Turr Phennir + Push The Limit+Shield Upgrade and found this to be a highly maneuverable & deadly combo. I paired him with a Saber Squadron Pilot + Expose+Shield Upgrade and the combo was also quite effective. I did lose the SSP due to superior enemy numbers and some incredible bad luck (Fired at a Y-wing at range 1, rolled 5 Attack dice, missed with 4 and the Y-wing dodged the 5th; return fire <3 attack dice> resulted in 2 hits & 1 crit; I managed to fail every evade die, taking 4 damage <2 normal damage and a Direct Hit critical) but P hennir was able to extract revenge. Overall, the pair destroyed more than their weight (points wise) in enemy ships but the battle was eventually lost. C'est la guerre.

To accurately recreate the 181st outside a major engagement where the entire the fighter group would participate, would be broken down into 3 squadrons.

1/181st: Commanded by Soontir Fel. Wingman: Fel's Wrath.

2/181st: Commaned by Turr Phennir. Wingman: Unsure, so Saber Squadron pilot works.

3/181st: Commander I believe went unnamed. Though the third squadron in the group had the least experienced pilots. Meaning when Ace's comes out Lieutenant Lorrir would be a good assumption for 3/181st. Though according to cannon, he never actually commanded any of the squadrons. In fact he was only with the fighter group for a short time.

Back on the topic of fielding all 4 saber squadron pilots on x wing miniatures game... ive done it many times. Problem is there are players who just want to win and use those same 100 points to field 2 falcons, 2-3 firesprays, 4 Y wings and so on. No matter how good they are, they are just too fragile and they are no match for a 360 fire ark. (dont even get me started on my bad rolls) I still field them all the time because they look awesome :)

There will be yet another 181st pilot. Maybe FFG dug up the name of Turr's wingman ... or even the commander of the 3rd element.

I know Aces isn't out, yet, but if I were to get it, would anyone be interested in buying the Royal Guard half?

PM if interested.
