Claiming power tokens

By nick83, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi there.

Apologies if this has already been dealt with elsewhere, but I have a question regarding the source of power tokens for successful challenges and undefended challenges.

The rules say that a power token for a successful power challenge comes from the defender's stash, but am I right in thinking the extra token for an undefended challenge comes from the pool?

And what happens with cards like Assertion of Might - do those 3 tokens also come from the pool rather than the defender? And is it safe to assume that the tokens always come from the pool unless the card specifically tells you to take it from a player's total?

Finally, what happens if the defender cannot satisfy a claim? I'm sure that's explained somewhere, but can't seem t find it anymore.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

^^This.

Seriously, though, whenever a card or effect says to "claim power," that power comes from the common power pool. When a card or effect says to "move power" (like satisfying the challenge result - i.e., "claim," yeah, I know it's confusing - for a power/crown challenge), you take it from where the effect specifically says to take it from (usually from another player's House card, but sometimes characters, etc.).

That's the general rule. In terms of your exact questions, if you win a power challenge, it does come from the defender's House card (not his "stash," because that could be thought to include the power on his characters). If you win an unopposed challenge (any type), the power comes from the common power pool. Assertion of Might also comes from the common pool as it is a "claim" effect.

Also, if you are told to move power from somewhere and there is no power there to be moved, nothing happens. So, for example, if you win a power challenge against an opponent who has no power on their House card, you don't get any power (no matter what the "claim" value on your plot card is). You would, however, still get the power from the common pool for "unopposed." The common pool can never be empty.

Thanks for the swift reply ktom - as I thought, but good to get confirmed!
