What will 'Force & Destiny' look like?

By Maelora, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

All stories get tiresome if they get repeated over and over. Not the best of points if you ask me.

What I'm saying is that while the generally self-serving members of an EE campaign can be 'tbought' by the Alliance for an AR-themed adventure (like Han Solo was), the opposite is less true. A fighter pilot/commando/commodore isn't likely to be able to constantly take time away from their duties to the Rebellion in order to go help out the Trader and Scoundrel with their newest scheme. Sure, it can happen once in a while, but 'odd couples' like this don't make for good permanently mixed groups in my opinion unless the EE characters are pretty much willing to give up their independence (like Han Solo and Lando who both pretty much sold out to the Alliance/New Republic and became AR characters that just happened to start with EE careers).

You've never been in the military I take it? A completely plausible story for the AoR is they just got plain sick of war and chains of command and walked away from it. Lots of us have.

Really dude? I am trying to actually be civil about it.

I am not engaging you in any more discussions because I like to see other people’s points and not feel like I am in a contest and with you it feels like that. You can keep trying to make me get back to the topic but I have been very, very clear about it; I will not. It is not a a question of „can’t” it is a question of „won’t”. If it makes it easier for you to let it go, then consider yourself the victor.

If you deem my way „not really an appropriate way to have a discussion” and I feel that having a discussion with you is tantamount to „driving into a one-way dead-end street” wouldn’t it make more sense to just stop it?

You're absolutely correct on one thing.

Well at least your true colors are showing.

Hahahaha, Oh my god.

You coulda just dropped it.

But, because Disney haven't made up what happens after Endor yet FFG probably can't do that.

I would argue just because we don't know what Disney's decided about what happens post-Endor doesn't mean Disney doesn't know what happens. We're just not in the loop. FFG, as holder of one of their licenses, would be entitled to that information.

If AoR is post-Hoth, then I could easily believe FaD is post-Endor. I suspect that's the case, but I haven't heard it definitively yet, so I won't make assumptions either way. And even if they are, all the books are cross-compatible for different points in time, so there's nothing stopping me from allowing a hidden Jedi character to an EotE game. (Well, except my own prejudices.)

But most importantly:

I think the book will be blue.

If AR is post-Hoth, there's not much more than one year before the Battle of Endor. That's a fairly narrow range. I think that AR defaults to immediately post-Yavin just like EE.

I think because it focuses on the Rebellion, it can be taken to be any time during the Rebellion. So any time from before Yavin during the creation of the Rebellion to after Endor during the mopping up of the Empire. Just because there was mention of the Battle of Yavin in EotE doesn't mean anything. It is just a reference point. Edge games could take place anywhen. AoR uses the Rebellion as a reference point, but you could also run a game during the Rebellion in the Legacy Era.

I wasn't saying that was where games had to be set, just thats the setting that the books are focused on, even thematically linking each book to one of the movies works because around the Battle of Yavin the Rebellion is a small group just starting to be an annoyance to the Empire, Around the Battle of Hoth the Rebellion has become much larger and is somewhat more of a threat to the Empire hence the commitment of many more resources to rooting them out, and as I've previously said post Endor is a much safer time for Force users to start crawling back out of hiding.

... and as I've previously said post Endor is a much safer time for Force users to start crawling back out of hiding.

Safer, certainly, but not necessarily more interesting.

Anyone who has been around since the EotE beta knows that FFG has created a game inspired by the original trilogy. Just because the reference something like the battle of Yavin doesn't mean anything other than it is reference to help the reader. F&D may reference after Endor or during the Rebellion or during the Dark Times. This is a game where the players are the heroes, not Luke, Han or Leia. The rules will be created to enable that. No where is it going to tell you that Luke is the only Jedi or that you can not do this or that because it wan't in the movies. The only limitations will be the ones you put on themselves. So in the end, what does it matter what time F&D references?

Safer, certainly, but not necessarily more interesting.

One needs to remember that the PCs are not stuck in an uncaring universe with the overwhelming evil of the Empire. Rather, the Empire is stuck in a universe where good triumphs over evil with the PCs!

So the Empire's trapped inside with psychopathic killer willing to do any criminal act? I've never thought of it that way. Kind of goes against your normal, altruistic viewpoint that the Rebels are the good guys doesn't it? Makes them out to be more like terrorists.

I am thinking that at this point using a lightsaber will be a force power. This keeps the deflect and defensive abilities accessible while keeping the fluff that lightsabers are incredibly difficult for a non Jedi to use.

So the Empire's trapped inside with psychopathic killer willing to do any criminal act?

Also, PCs tend to be complete psychopaths with the tenacity of angry sharks when it comes to pursuing their goals. Anything that assumes the PCs will behave like normal people and not complete psychopaths with the tenacity of angry sharks will tend to not work.

People, take a deep breath or this will be a REAAALLY long year. Too much agressivity and its only January 2nd XDD

Thats the good point about internet and forums, share ideas and learn from other point of views. Just with respect this can become so much better and we will grow and individuals. OMG its a SW geeky forum... a place where you can say words like "lightsaber, alien or mental powers" without being apointed as a UBER NERD! XD

There is any release date for Force & Destiny BETA?

PS: Hey ErikB, this time you aren't the main focus of the discussion! XD

Got to admit, the Rorsharch thing vexes me.

It was my gut reaction to say I don't think something so dark as Watchmen is a good fit for the SW universe, where the end doesn't justify the means and bad things come around to bite you on the ass.

But.

One of my players reminded me we already have a 'rogue' rebel cell who are seen as heroes in some quarters and the top brass notably don't do anything about them because they are effective. Yes, they are meant to be the PCs adversaries, a dark reflection of what they might become if they are not careful. a cautionary tale.

And another player reminded me we've removed the Jedi and Sith as their own factions, so an Alliance-leaning, Empire-hating darksider is perfectly permissible.

All of which makes me kinda uncomfortable, but that's our set-up. It would be hypocritical of me, after that, to disallow a Marv (Sin City) or Frank Castle character. I think it would be a VERY narrow line to walk, but... possible. Rorsharch, Punisher and Marv don't ever kill anyone who doesn't thoroughly deserve it, although the zeal in which they do evil unto evil-doers is uncomfortable.

An Alliance soldier like Craig Boone from Fallout: New Vegas might actually be a good concept for an AOR character.

All this is a touch more dark than I'd intended, but I find myself admitting I would probably consider a PC in that mode.

If FFG follows on what they have done so far with the EotE and AoR betas it will be at GenCon this year.

The one thing I'm 99% certain about is that the immediate post RoJ EU status of the Empire being still around but on the back foot will still be in place.

Also having the books go through the chronology of the original trilogy would work out extremely nicely for both Disney and FFG, as they could then release material for the new movies that could lead right off of every thing they've previously released.

So in the end, what does it matter what time F&D references?

I don't think anyone's arguing that you can't have the game take place any time you want, it's just the EotE begins with the assumption (and it's only a suggestion, but it runs throughout the entire book) that the events of the campaign will take place immediately following the Battle of Yavin.

So we're just speculating that AoR will assume the time as post-Hoth, and the FaD book will assume post-Endor. When you get down to the details, remove even the thinnest layer of fluff from the books, the games could be set during the Original Trilogy, the Prequel Trilogy, the Old Republic, or Legacy. It's a freedom of setting by design.

Got to admit, the Rorsharch thing vexes me.

To be honest I really just mean that the trick to doing optimistic stories in dark times is to see things as opportunities instead of problems.

The unending armies of the Empire don't mean things are hopeless. It means your PC is in a Target Rich Environment.

The Empire hunting Jedi doesn't mean your PCs are going to keep being TPKed beneath the Empires jackboot. It means a whole heck of a lot of the Empires Jedi hunters are about to discover that they messed with the wrong Jedi.

I think being just after the battle of Yavin is the best time for all books. For edge of the empire the empire would be increasing its interest in smugglers and the like due to them possibly working with the empire. People would also be trying to get out of the way of the lyleks den as it were, with the empire being the agitated lylek.

For age of rebellion, the rebels blew up the death star, revealing their hidden base and would be scattered before rallying at hoth. Finally for force and destiny, force users previously in hiding are either offerred a brief respite with the empire focused on ferreting out rebels, or have to pick up shop because the increased paranoia of the empire.

All these reasons are great for each books thematic differrences.

If I ignored everyone who has acted like a jerk in this thread, this forum would be like a ghost town.

There's no point to that observation, really.

On topic -- My vote is for green.

August can't come fast enough. Without Jedi, it just isn't Star Wars to me.

I'm with you with that Timberboar. Jedi are like starfighter, blasters or aliens in SW, they are the essence and the heart of this world.

People here uses to discuss more about balance possibilities that Jedis appearance itself. I remember the old D6 edition that have "minor versions" of remanent Jedis and also the Force Alien Adept.

I hope that a more "pure version" of the Jedi will appear in Edge.

The US invaded Europe in June of 44 and Japan Surrendered by Sep 45. A year can have plenty goin on in it.

It sounds like "Bad Company" specifically selects for Alliance-leaning/Empire-hating to such an extent that darksider comes with the territory... so I think that you've already established "Alliance-leaning, Empire-hating darksider" as already existing in your campaign as NPCs, and it was just a matter of whether the PCs could be too. :P
