Pilot Skill Fleetbuilding Challenge!

By DraconPyrothayan, in X-Wing

So, we've probably all played against a fleet who were all Level 6 at some point in our careers, what with Dutch, Garven, Kyle, and Ibtisam (and occasionally Arvell) all being awesome together.

This has inspired me to wonder how many other awesome interactions we can have when all the pilots are the same skill level.

So here are the rules to this challenge:

  1. All pilots in the fleet must have the same Pilot Skill.
  2. You may have a max of 2 of the same ship in your fleet.
  3. You must use a 100 point fleet-base (so 99 and 98 pointers are still valid)
  4. Include a descriptor of how the ships actually work together (e.g. "Dutch", Garven, and Kyle all pass their actions around to each other, and maximize the damage they can spit out).

I look forward to seeing your fleets!

PS 9

Wedge, R2-D2, Push the Limit, Advanced Proton Torpedo

Han, Marksmanship, Gunner, Chewbaca

Only 2 ships, but its not out of the question for them to chew up 1 or 2 ships / round. That APT on Wedge can even 1 shot a fresh X-Wing before it can shoot....

Here's my thought on PS 8 (Rebels)

Ten Nunb

+ Advanced Sensors

[34]

Luke Skywalker

+ Draw Their Fire

+ R2-D2

[33]

Horton Salm

+ Proton Torpedoes

+ Proton Torpedoes

[33]

High damage all around, with the tankiest of the lot (Luke) eating crits for his compatriots. Horton Salm's double Protons will hit like a truck, and the fact that he's either got 3 attack dice or 2 + a conditional Howlrunner gives him very consistent damage across the board. Many would have picked Marksmanship for Ten instead of Adv. Sensors, but I think Adv. Sensors is a bit stronger. Overall, this team hits like a brick wall, and has the survivalility of one as well.

Other PS 8 pilots to consider were Jan Ors and Tycho Celchu, both of which are also phenomenal.

Garven Dreis, R2D2, Shield Upgrade (34)

Kyle Katarn, Push the Limit, Ion Cannon Turret, Recon Specialist (32)

Ibtisam, Push the Limit, Advanced Sensors (34)

Why these ships and upgrades?

I considered using Moldy Crow title but opted for Push the Limit instead as its more versatile (sure I dont get to build up insane amounts of focus tokens but I dont need to when I am passing a single token back and forth between my squad). All three ships are threats. Having an Ion Cannon in the mix adds further versatility against those pesky imperial fighters. R2 and extra shield on Dreis gives him needed durability. Push the Limit on Ibtisam lets him stress himself anytime I want to use his reroll ability.

What tactics would I use?

Keep your Hwk-290 out of the thick of the battle - skirt the edges of the board and use asteroids for cover whenever possible. Katarn gets extra focus every time he selects focus action thanks to recon specialist and he supports from medium range with ion attacks and passing a free focus to Garven who is your frontline heavy hitter. Garven attacks with focus fire then passes free focus to Ibtisam (who gets a potential two actions already with Push The Limit).

Summary of how it plays

1. Take focus as one of your possible actions with Katarn (he now has two focus).

2. Pass one focus token to Dreis.

3. Focus Fire with Dreis and then pass the focus to Ibtisam.

4. Ibtisam can use focus for attack or defense but it is most effective on attack supporting a target locked attack (Target Lock, roll attack dice, use Target Lock to reroll any blanks, use focus to flip any eye symbols to hits).

There might also be situations where Dreis will pass the focus right back to Katarn for extra defense in the same round after Dreis has used it.
