Is there a difference...

By BountyHunterH, in X-Wing

Is there a difference between the X-wings from the starter set and expansion? Same question for Ties.

I'm looking to get into the game in a small scale semi-competitive fashion and my Target has the starter sets for $19.99 right now so I'm thinking of a 2nd set.

Thanks for the input.

There are different pilot cards and droids between the two releases, but the models are the same.

Buy 2 and one of each expansion and you'll be well on your way to a fleet!

Yes and No.

The Expansions have some upgrades and unique pilots that the Starter set does not. This makes getting the expansions helpful. The actual model can be used interchangeably.

If you can get the starter for a clearance price under $20 then do it unless you have no need for more basic fighters, extra templates, and additional dice. Considering that $15 isn't a "bad" price for a single fighter getting three of them for $20 is a bargain that is rarely seen for single ships and even those exclude some of the extras.

I started this autumn and made the plan to buy one of each ship at first so i started with the starter set and an Awing and a Tie bomber

This gave me and my son some good variations to chose from

Starting with small battles will also give you a good fell for the micro management of this game;)

The only difference is in the Pilots and Upgrades.

The following descriptors ignore upgrades and pilots also appearing in the Core Set.

The X-Wing expansion comes with Garven Dreis ( lvl 6 pilot, no EPT slot, with "Whenever Garven Dreis uses a Focus Token, he may assign that token to another ship at Range 1-2 instead of discarding it" ) and Wedge Antilles ( level 9, EPT slot, with "When attacking, the defender rolls 1 less Agility Die" ). It also comes with Expert Handling , R5 Astromech , and R5-K6 .

The Tie Fighter expansion comes with Winged Gundark ( lvl 5 pilot, no EPT slot, with "When attacking at Range 1, you may turn one Hit result into a Crit result." ), Backstabber ( lvl 6 pilot, no EPT slot, with "When attacking from outside the defender's firing arc, roll 1 additional attack die" ), and Howlrunner ( lvl 8 pilot, EPT slot, with " When another friendly ship at Range 1 is attacking with its primary weapon, it may reroll 1 attack die" ). It also comes with Swarm Tactics .

two starter sets is a good base to work with. from there id recommend buying at least one of each expansion pack for each ship u like. FFG has cleverly packaged its upgrades for x-wing so that u can only get certain upgrades in the expansions - as stated here already the Tie-fighter expansion gives u Howlrunner and Swarm Tactics and the X-Wing expansion gives you Wedge.

heres the startup ships i recently bought for a friend (some where from my own collection)

1x starter set (2x ties, 1x X-Wing)

1x tie-fighter expansion

1x x-wing (from my collection)

1x a-wing (from my collection)

1x tie-intercepter expansion

this allows him and his son to play 70-80pt squads.

his next expansion will likely be the tie-advanced and from there the B-Wing (this will bump him up to 100pt squads).

There are two X-wing models. On one the engines are a part of the wings and it is more detailed, on the other the engines are glued on to the back of the wings.

All the X-wing models in my collection are identical, and I have two core sets and three expansions.

Wedge!

The X-Wing models are the same, but the original releases tended to be put together a bit sloppily, with the guns and engines at odd angles. The reprints seem to have been assembled to a higher level of quality and have thinner paint, allowing more detail to show though. The detail is there on the originals, but its hidden under thicker paint.

The X-Wing expansion has 2 good droids for Y-Wings in general, R5 astromech and R5K6. The Y-Wing expansion has a good droid for every droid-able ship, the R2 astromech.

Commercial synergy!

The other repliers have given you good info about the Starter Set vs Expansions.

But at that price you should add a 2nd Starter. The variety of pilots/ships will help you build squads.

And welcome back to SW minis. You are still listening to SWMiniverse where we now cover X-Wing as well as SWM, right? :)
