If one of my characters is discarded from my hand due to an intrigue challenge does it go to my dead pile or my discard pile?

Discard.

Discard pile.

Only an effect which "kills" a character (example; military claim, "Die by the Sword"), or an effect which specifically places it in your dead pile (Aegon's Hill) results in it being placed in the dead pile.

Anything else results in discarding (eg King's Law, Dissension, Intrigue claim, We take Westeros) specifically says "discard".
