Upgrade/Downgrade Order

By cvtheoman, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm curious if there's a consensus on the order of up/downgrading dice pools. The CR says if all dice are up/downgraded already, start add/subtracting dice. However, what if multiple things are upgrading and downgrading a single check?

For instance, say a PC has to make an Average Coercion check. If the GM uses a destiny point to upgrade and the PC has Intimidating, they could just cancel out, leaving 2 Difficulty dice. But if the Intimidating talent takes precendence, then the downgrade becomes just one Difficulty die, and the upgrade from the GM makes it one Challenge die.

Thoughts?

Upgrades first and then downgrades second per the rules p. 22. However in your case intimidating is downgrading the difficulty level and the GM's D point is upgrading what remains left of the difficulty level dice pool, so it's not an apples to apples comparison really.

Also, when you downgrade you never actually remove difficulty dice. You change Challenge (red) dice for Difficulty (purple) dice until there are no red dice left. Only when the difficulty is decreased do you remove dice.

Good call. I thought downgrading could remove dice like upgrading can add dice, but p. 22 of the CR says otherwise.

Yeah, apparently quite a few folks have made that mistake ("Oh, if I downgrade enough times I can remove difficultly dice!"), likely due to upgrading and downgrading being pretty much the same that they read the section on upgrading, read enough of the downgrading to see that they were largely the same, and moved on to the next section.
