How do you pronounce Houk?

By HappyDaze, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

With regards to the Houk species, how is the "ou" meant to be pronounced?

1. /ow/ as in found
about, house, shout, mouse, count, loud, sound, hound
2. long o as in four
pour, course, court, gourd, mourn, fourth
3. /oo/ as in you
your, tour, crouton, group, coup
4. /uh/ as in country
cousin, double

I pronounce it "Ho-uk" (Ho as in four, uk as in uk as in (y)ou), so it sounds a bit more primitive ;-)

As someone who relies on text to speech, I can tell you that this email got read to me with the ou pronounced as in house. I know that's not always accurate with made up words but it seems to get a lot of species right while things are another story. Tibana rhymes with banana, for example...

...and some people in Canada are probably still confused.

ABOUT ABOUT ABOUT ABOUT!! lol

Worse yet. How do you pronounce Ghtroc?

I pronounce "Houk" as "Hoook" (the crouton one, or the first syllable in "h o o k a h" [apparently the tobacco water pipe from Asia and the Middle East, also used by the caterpillar in Alice and Wonderland is a banned word]), and I pronounce Ghtroc as "Gih-trok" (it would ryme with "whip-rock").

With all the different dialects in Star Wars, I'm quite positive that there's no "right" answer, although I'm gonna go with PrettyHaley because computers n' stuff lol.

I pronounce it the 'ow' way, in honour of Bob Hauk ('howk') from Escape from New York:

Ghtroc I pronounce 'get-trock'

While we're on the subject, how the 'hail' do you pronounce Sa Nalaor???

And Haley, only Canadian characters on tv say "a-boot"! The rest of us really don't!

Right now I'm considering pronouncing Houk as Hook (like Captain Hook), but I like the /ow/ version (like the beginning of "house" with a hard "k" at the end) too.

For some reason, I always went with "HY-trok". It sounded cool to me and made it feel a little more exotic that way instead of being more literal.

For the OP's question, I went with a long O sound HOOK, rhymes with Luke.

Just my best guesses

As for the houk, why not use them all depending on the dialect of the speaker?

As for ghtroc, i pronounce it 'turtle'. :P

I say: Sah Nah-la-Orr

I have heard Canadians say it more like "a-boat" than "a-boot." The "a-boot" reminds me more of Minnesotans.

Houk seems to make the most sense as /ow/ since all of the other words that start with an "h" have that pronunciation though a HO-uhk would also be possible in my opinion . The long o seems to usually precede an "r." I feel like anything that isn't used in the movies doesn't have an "official" pronunciation (unless specified by the creator of the word) and could be open to people's interpretation.

Sah Na layor

If Star Wars has taught us anything, it's that consistent pronunciation is not a requirement. How many different ways is "Naboo" pronounced in just Episode I?
