Epic fail...

By TallTonyB, in X-Wing

Just played a game against a buddy. He took a range 3 shot with his Tie/Int against my howlrunner with stealth (his three dice vs my five) and one shot her. Not going to lie but that one is going to live on in my memory for awhile. What kind of epic fails haunt your brains?

First time I ever flew the falcon I banked right when I should have banked left. Nothing worse than losing half your build to that error.

I've also had my Dark Curse with a stealth device one shot at range 3 after taking a focus action. It was the third game in a row that I specifically brought DC to the table and added the stealth device on purpose just to be obnoxious. I may have even uttered that taboo sentence: "I'm fine unless I roll [5] blanks".

lol, yeah I rolled 4 blanks, one evade, he rolled two hits and a crit. and of course the crit was double damage because of course it was.

This is more epic bad luck... last turn of a really intense game. I'm playing an experimental squad of Vader, Maarek + Turr (id lost Turr in the 1st exchange and battled back against two falcons (Han and Chewie). So im a ship down and have a chance to take out Chewie (he has no shields and 2 hull left).

Maarek lines up a close range shot. Vader gets in a hit, leaving Chewie on one Hull, Han shoots next going for Maarek hoping to take him down b4 Chewie gets blasted.

I wasnt that concerned as Maarek has full 2 shields and 3 hull left. Han gets a dream roll, 3 crits!, I fudge my defense rolls so maareks shields takes the 1st two crits, no problem... I draw the damage card for the 3rd crit and its... Blinded Pilot! even a direct hit crit doing two damage would have been ok. What r the odds of that? So i miss my chance to take the final close range shot on Chewie :(

Last week I played a 1:1, 300 point game. It was a complete shut-out. I lost. We used capital ships, and his took a lot of damage, though you'd think with 300 points on the table I could have killed ONE of his fighters? Nope. Fail.

During my first tournament I played three tie advanced with stealth and Howlrunner. It didn't work out. Stealth devices all failed me, and I flew one of the advanced off the board in a k-turn. Fail.

A few days ago my opponent had Turr with stealth. He was at range three away from one of my Y's and a HWK. The Y fired his primaries and got two hits. My opponent rolled his 5 dice. All blank. He had an evade token so blocks one. One of the hits went through stripping him of his stealth. Next the HWK fires his one attack dice for his attack. One crit. My opponent rolls his four defense dice this time, all blanks again. The crit was direct hit causing two damage. Turr was killed in the first pass. It was hilariously bad luck for him. He ended up winning the game though anyways!

I feel you but I was the one doing the shot. Fel with stealth at range 3 through an asteroid. I figured better to roll dice and shoot than not. So my awing shoots hit crit, all blank single hit with double damage interceptor down. My friend called the game with that on turn 3. Next game that poor awing had his whole army gunning for it.

It was worse than that. I had boosted, so I didn't have an evade token. You only rolled one hit with the Y-Wing. :)

And yes, that tough little bomber was incredible. You flew well and it came down to that last joust.

First worlds, my semifinal match against Hothie, shot my concussion missile at HR, four blanks.

Two games in a row I've lost my A-wing in round 2 against a Lambda Shuttle with Darth Vader, in the same way:

1) Shuttle blows away A-wing shields

2) Vader kills A-wing with a Direct Hit critical.

FYI, assuming nobody had focus tokens, that had a 1.19% chance of happening. Pretty small, but when you roll the dice enough it's bound to happen. It makes for fun stories though.

Edit: Not taking crits into account!

Vader's Doom Shuttle doesn't get enough credit. With named ties surrounding it and stripping shields first it is lethal. It's the only ship in he game that if it fires it is garunteed to do damage. That should never be over looked.

I have not played the game enough to have any good stories yet, but I have to say you earn mad props for haveing the character to tell us your excellent story of deadly defeate.

That tells us you are on the right side of The Force.

:)

Well, it was bad for my chum...Thanks to Wedge getting 5 hits with an APT, and a B-wing finishing it up, his Firespray got knocked out in a single turn. That was a good day.

I watched a game where Biggs one shotted Dark Curse at range 3 with a stealth device. High larious.

Me personally though: Tycho with focus/evade, stealth, range 3, through a rock getting shot at by a single Tie Fighter (only shot the entire round) and him getting hit/hit. I rolled 6 blanks and canceled one with the evade token. I almost quit right there.

Zouch!

I one shot Fel with stealth using a B-wing range 3 through an asteroid. 3 attack vs. 6 defense. Rolled 3 hits and he rolled all blanks.

In a 1 v 1 v1 free for all, I came in third on a huge fail. We were all on our last ship. As Tycho at full health + stealth device, range 3, from BEHIND A FREAKING ASTEROID, a buddy of mine one shot me. The worst part was he had no shot at first and convinced the third guy, who was positioned between us, to boost instead of staying so that on his move he would land in range. Had the other guy stayed as he had planned, my eventual killer would have collided and been pushed back onto another asteroid--what I had planned all along. It's forever known to us now as that time "you boosted when you should have stayed" and the go to reason I give for never giving that guy a break. Not my killer. The booster.

Watching 4 or more dice come up all blanks is always a super deflating feeling. Loving the other stories though. If stuff like this didn't happen, it wouldn't be so sweet when you get the epic win.

That takes the cake so far! Less than a 0.07% chance of that happening, i.e. 1:1438... ouch

For anyone who knows me, I play a lot of dice games...I don't know why. Last thursday - GW game; Hit on 3s, wound on 2's...12 dice...3 hits 0 wounds...I am that kinda lucky, Anyhoo...lots to report here so I shall pick 2 of the best...an entire game where I rolled 1 evade IN TOTAL and a turn where I lined up 4 ships on 1 of my opponents and managed 1 hit out of 12 dice...it was cancelled.

Come to think of it, why do I play games with dice? I am great at card games! Sorry, I need to rethink my life.

Not sure if this really counts, but I once played a 4 ship rebel build w/ Biggs, Rookie Xwing, ORSw/Gunner & RebOp w/ ion turret vs Vader & some TIEs. Biggs took no damage that whole game. Every time I lined him up behind what I wanted to protect, he was either out of arc or past range 3 of the attacker. Every Single TIME!!! I ended up winning the game b/c my opponent didn't focus fire anything down, the ion turret did it's work in the asteroids, oh and Biggs one shot 2 TIEs before they could shoot him, rolling 3 hits 1 crit, then 2 hits 2 crits all natural on dice. So I won, but Biggs unscathed seems like an epic fail to me.

Never tell me the odds.

It was a tournament match and I was winning with a 3 Firespray build, when I confused the direction an unhit Firespray was facing and flew it 3 forward right off the map.
