New to RPG, Have core rule book!

By TheGiB2, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Okay, so I use to play RPG games way back in the early 90's. And for this Christmas I decided that with my three weeks off I'm going to introduce my kids to RPG games (Minus the computer screen) Kids already love Star Wars, so this should be an easy sell. Kids are 11 and 14.

I went out and got the core rule book ($73 CDN!) but looking on YouTube I've come to realize there is a "Beginners Guide" that is out there, that none of the stores here have in stock anymore and are not likely to get it in stock in time for the holidays.

I've got the Dice App for the iPads, so that should keep them somewhat involved since there is technology involved.

So reviewing the core rule book, there are no pre-made character sheets, scenarios, etc.. and I think starting like this, would just be TO over whelming for them (and me). REALLY wish I had the starting scenario to walk the kids through it, step by step.

Any ideas? I did see some scenarios on the first locked post but it didn't seem to have all the features I would need, such as what dice to use when. Need it to be simple.

If you can't get your hands on the Beginner game (it is worth it) there is a free adventure with pre-generated characters on the site called Under a Black Sun.

The Beginner Game site there is also a followup adventure called Long Arm of the Hutt. It works best if you just finished the Beginner Set, but you could possibly adapt it.

Did you also look at the adventure in the Core book?

If you want you could take the time to figure the game out a bit on your own. Then, you knowing your kids and what they like most in the background, make them a set of characters yourself. The adventure in the core book should provide enough guide for you for a session. The basic dice mechanics of combat/social/tech interactions is pretty straightforward and simple. A lot of the material in the book is for a full on campaign, but to just intro them to RPGing it also isn't essential.

Black Sun adventure is free and has a very good summary of how to play the game. I actually would avoid the beginner box and jump in with Black Sun...its just better and won't confuse the kids moving forward. I can speak from experience with my 10 and 8 year old.

I'll throw in another vote for the Beginner Box... there's just so much lovely gak in there to get excited about. And then when you're ready to get into the game proper, you've already got your dice and some Destiny tokens. :)
