Big Game Hunter doesn't have 'Hunter' talent?

By Maelora, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This seems a bit bizarre to me. Almost as odd as the stats for Chiss :)

The BGH fluff seems to suggest it excels in hunting animals.

But it lacks the actual talent that would make it good at actually interacting and bringing down beasties?

Seems a peculiar oversight to me...

That is pretty darn odd.

LOL I noticed this as well. Way I see it, despite its name Hunter can be used for taming and handling animals as well as hunting them, which isn't necessarily something a Big Game Hunter would want to do. Plus it gives BGHs a reason to become Survivalists.

(It IS really weird, though.)

I was thinking maybe ditching one of the outdoorsman ranks for a hunter would be about right. I could see a BGH wanting some level of animal handling to be able to use pack and riding animals on a hunt.

bring it down tallent just a thought

I'm with you there. Like everyone else, I'm baffled as to why the Hunter talent wouldn't belong to, you know... a Big Game Hunter (and how it does apply to a Bounty Hunter, even if he is a Survivalist).

I personally don't see why you'd HAVE to multi-class into Survivalist.

Multi-classing should compliment your character - you shouldn't have to do it to gain the thematic abilities you should have in your main class.

It feels like a Slicer having to take Smuggler/Thief just to get computer hacking abilities.

A Survivalist Bounty Hunter going on a long trek into the wilderness would use Hunter both to defend himself and to use trained animals to help track his quarry.

And a BGH wouldn't?

I mean, the Explorer book specifically gives you animal hunting gear like cyberdogs and beast calls and specimen cages and even a droid that's basically a floating animal pen...

But BGH's aren't especially good at bringing down animals...?

Of course not. They would be shipped in via luxury craft, treated to a fine dinner, and then filmed doing their thing. :D

Wasn't justifying why Big Game Hunters don't have it, only why Survivalists do. I wouldn't mind if Big-Game Hunters got the Hunter talent myself, it would certainly make sense, I'm just not advocating changing things up. It would make sense if Assassins got True Aim, if Pilots got Full Stop, or if Scouts got Hunter as well. Unfortunately, they don't.

You know, a player asked me today if they could take the 'Sponsorship' obligation, and have a 'Reality TV' show...

It didn't initially sound very 'Star Wars-y' but I'm starting to consider it...

I think you are all getting hung up on the Titles of things and not looking at What they are supposed to be doing.

You could DEFINITELY give that some Star Wars flavor with a little creativity. Could be a lot of fun! It would also be fraught with danger in an era where the Empire controls the media and even holo-series executives are vying for the Emperor's favor. Hell, if you give us updates on the show, I might even incorporate it as background material in my own game.

The only part of the Hunter talent that would really jive with what the Big Game Hunter generally does (that is, track down and kill dangerous animals) is the bonus attack checks and critical injury rolls. They've already got talents that help with tracking prey (Expert Tracker and to a lesser extent Outdoorsman), catching said prey unawares (Stalker), and being able to capitalize on the opening shot (Quick Strike as well as Hunter's Quarry). In spite of the name, adding the Hunter talent doesn't really feel like it's needed, as the bulk of a Big Game Hunter's interaction with animals is going to be "put the beastie in my sights and pull the trigger" in contrast to the Survivalist's general feel of "getting along and working in tandem with nature."

as i have started a character with big game hunter the Hunter part of the spec needs to come from your rp in game to be perfectly honest.

What do you mean by this?

Probably that one cannot rely entirely upon game mechanics to cover every aspect of a character. The stats and numbers provide a framework, but the framework alone doesn't make a character.

Good points, JH. We don't really have the Empire controlling all the media, in as much as there are sizeable Alliance areas and Fringe ones too, where it's more important to suck up to the local crime lords than the Emperor... We also assume a lot of the media and HoloNet isn't flashy and expensive like today; there's mostly bad connections, slow and prone to cutting out, especially in the Outer Rim. A reality show would be like the early days of the internet, with the production values and professionalism of iCarly or Wayne's World. The kind of thing the wookies would be watching in the 'Holiday Special' ;)

The player has a Archaelogist/BGH who is the 'face and figure of Czerka Legacy Arms' - an attractive forty-something (yes, the player is sucking up to me, I know!) hired to flog slugthrowers to the more adventurous among the civilian market... mostly lesser nobles with too much money who want to be seen as dashing and adventurous.

That's a pretty big omission. Wow.

I picture the big game hunter is more of a 'great white hunter' trope. The person who "hunts" by means of an indigenous guide and then murders the animal for a trophy, much like some members of colonial Britain and their excursions to Africa.

Your parsecs may vary in the enterpretation however.

Considering the way he's playing with his gun, I'm surprised it hasn't shot off yet...

Good call about Holo entertainment on the Outer Rim. I envision much the same, with the more populated and enduring planets like Ryloth and Nal Hutta having their own well-funded, culturally unique offerings. Much as it pains me to say it, the Holiday Special really is a good place to look for an example of everyday life in the GFFA.

Funny thing about Czerka Legacy Arms; my Bounty Hunter PC bought a Model 38 from a vendor on Sleheyron, and enjoyed roleplaying that so much he now wants to earn a sponsorship from them (as an Obligation) so he can get a patrol boat and some starfighters for his security company. He's totally hooked on the idea of becoming famous for using Czerka slughthrowers over blasters; he even said he'd abandon his Auto-fire heavy blaster rifles if I came up with attachments to keep the Model 38 in line with standard but fully modded blaster rifles.

I started a thread on it earlier. You should check it out, particularly if you have a player of your own fascinated by Czerka Legacy Arms.

I've always thought the hunter Talent was "mis-labeled" and that the + to crit injury is tacked on and makes no sense. Call it beast mastery or animal husbandry..something and build a knowledge skill to complement so you can then specialize in it.
