Advancing Classes as new books come out. Explorer to Jedi...ect

By Atraangelis, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello,

I have been thinking about this since i got the EOE book and see how FFG will be releasing the other books.

How do some of you plan to handle PC's who start in EOE when no rebel or jedi clases were available and want to migrate or improve to those newer classes when they come out??

In a recent conversation some of my players said it would disapointing to have charactes they started with not be able to be a rebel in the sence of a rebel class in the upcomming book.. or for that matter a Jedi.. later on.

Are our concerns unfounded?

They can spend 30 XP and buy a specialization from AoR.

It's perfectly acceptable to cross-spec between different books.

Yep, concerns unfounded. As Dbuntu said, you can cross-spec between different books, in fact one of the lead FFG folks said in an interview they planned to do exactly that with their characters...going from the fringe, moving on to join the Alliance while working up their minimal Force abilities, then becoming full blown Jedi once the Force and Destiny book comes out. Also, there's no real limit to the number of specialization trees you can buy, though each new one costs more and more XP.

For my players, I have no problem letting them retrofit, so long as the basic flavour is retained. My son plays an Explorer, and we just got our hands on the Enter the Unknown Explorer sourcebook, so I'm sure there are a few changes he's hoping to make.

You don't even need to drop 30xp on an AoR specialization. After whatever story event happens that gets them into the rebellion you tell them "Congratulations, we are now a part of the tribe.. I mean rebellion. Here's your starting Duty. Get some rest, your first mission starts next session."

And scene.

Cross-speccing is going to be a snap but for more extreme situations I'm offering a Character Park/ReRoll or a Respec when my group hits AoR and again with FaD. Some of my players really want to take their original characters all the way though the product line but others have shown an interest in trying different things. Considering I've got an enthusiastic group that's in it for the long haul I mostly just want to say Yes to this kind of stuff so they can have the kind of experience they want. If I was dealing with small-run campaigns or a table full of min-maxers I might view the whole deal differently, but this is how I'll be taking care of it.

Also, there's no real limit to the number of specialization trees you can buy, though each new one costs more and more XP.

I thought the Corebook said you could only have 3 specializations max.

We also don't even know if Jedi will be a career. My guess is that the careers and specializations will be more generic, such as sorcerer, warrior, etc. With the pilot specialty showing most likely, and Jedi, Sith, Dathomiri witch, etc will be ones Commitment (force and destiny's equivalent to obligation and Duty)

Also, there's no real limit to the number of specialization trees you can buy, though each new one costs more and more XP.

Apparently that limit was in the EotE beta, but it's not in the released Core. The increasing cost imposes its own practical limit...

You can cross-Specialize, but as Signature Abilities become more significant, will that be enough?

Operationalize "more significant" in that context. I generally don't think they will be any more significant than other major character and XP investments, but I guess we will see as we get more play time with all the material.

But to go ahead and hazzard an answer: Probably. Once every career has SigAbs I think it will be mostly a non-issue. Sure, a player may whine about wanting this ability over the one his original career has, but that guy is just a thermal detenator away from a new character anyway.

It's actually really hard to kill a PC with only one thermal detonator in this game. :P
