New to the forums - looking for strategies.

By Soaring Goat, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

Hello everyone!

I've just gotten back from another game of Twilight Imperium (the first game for me this year) and i liked it. I play with a group of inexperienced players so I don't really know any cool strategies or fancy moves that can be used during play. I've tried searching the internet using Google but I have been unable to find any (free) Twilight Imperium stratergy guides. The thing is I want to read other peoples strategies and incoorporate them in my own strategies because (as you might have guessed already) I'm a complete noob with no strategic thinking. I've found a wiki dedicated to TI but it doesn't contain any strategies or information about the game.

What I'd really want to find is a page dedicated (or atleast containing) guides for the different races of TI, technology guides and general guides. I think I could really grow as a player (and kick some butt in the process) if I would just look at a guide or two.

Any links to guides would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

this game is challanging to strategize for due to the random nature of the map.

i recomend you form your own strategy - it comes after 4 games or so, while the early gaems are learning by experience.

you will notice each race has its style and the at times their history side reflect a possible strategy.

Also check out ti3 wiki www.ti3wiki.org for resources to modify the game, learn tactics, and have questions answered.

cheek out ti3wiki page got race strategyes and more++

I'm relatively new, but in general four things to keep in mind AFAICT.

One, only one thing puts your butt on the throne of Mecatol Rex, Victory Points. Figure out which you are going to go for, and which are not worth the trouble. Leave those till later if you need the VP. Fleets, territory, techs, Stategy Cards, all should be means to Victory Points, or ways to preserve your position to reach VPs.

Two, Carl von Clausewitz wrote in On Wa r , "War is fought by human beings." Similarly TI3 is played by people, that Muaat Warsun is intimidating, but an under the table deal, or bribing him with a 3TG Trade Contract can send that Warsun off to threaten someone else. Conversely races with high combat potential have poorer trade contracts. Acting like a Mafioso (Nice empire you have over there, be a shame if 'something' happened to it) can be a way of extracting a trade agreement you would be unable to obtain on the strength of the contract you are offering in exchange. In a six player game you have little strategic depth, working the players directly can give you a secure border or get you a goal without a conflict.

Three, to quote The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates "If Violence wasn't your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it." Don't start a fight unless you think you have an advantage. Bring more and bigger ships to the party, and try and hit targets that are distracted (backstabbing) or weaker than you overall.

Four, The worst thing you can do is take a shot at someone and fail to do more than piss him off. If you are going to get into a fight, do it for a good reason. VPs are a decent one, just see if you can get the same without having to shoot someone else up first. But absent that or if you can stack (for example, conquest related POs and a SO that requires you to attack someone) build up a good strike force, plus a reserve to handle backstabs or hold out if you fail, and go for it. But once you pull the trigger don't let up till you at least got the VPs., then go back to point two. If your SO required you to take his home system, bribe him afterwards. TG to rebuild that shipyard you destroyed for your SO for example, sure you are paying him the cost of rebuilding it, but 2 VP is probably worth it. Either bribe or threaten peace out of him, preferably after you knocked down his fleets enough that he is more interested in keeping out other players thinking of playing vulture than getting revenge on you.
