X-Wing League Nights Season 2 at Madness - Plano, TX

By Hida77, in X-Wing Organized Play

I dont think theres anythign wacky, although I have seen some combos that I wouldnt necessarily have thought of. I think a lot of people are kinda building on the fly with whatever they can think of. Hard to define 'Wacky' though, since I don't think anything is too out-there really.

In any event, updated standings:

NOTE: MATT T - Did you happen to pick up some extra 1 and 2 speed straight templates? Jon-Paul was missing some, thought he might have lost them after your game. If you did, no worries, just get them back to me (Matt K) next week if you can so I can return them. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone to come out, is really great to have such a big turnout! Hope to see everyone again next week! Friday cant come fast enough =).

I think I'm wacky enough to qualify. ;)

Thanks for the updates. :)

what squads r ppl playing there? nething outside the norm?

Well, there's me. So some weird stuff. Mostly, I've been playing the list we've been talking about, with minor variations.

One parts DoomCow

Two parts TIE Fighter

A dash of named Firespray

Pilot vigorously

I've been doing very well with it, though much more successfully with Boba Fett than Kath Scarlet. I won 6 of 6 games with Fett, but only 1 of 4 with Kath. Too small a sample to be anything more than anecdotal, but I'm probably going back to play with Fett some more. Though ironically the only victory I had with Kath was versus the Fett variant list. :)

Another list I had fun and success with was:

4x Scimitar Squadron + Seismic Charge

Turr Phennir + Stealth Device

Then my signature list:

2x Omicron + FCS + Gunner + Engine Upgrade

Captain Yorr + FCS + Gunner + Engine Upgrade + Intel Agent

I've faced off against a YY + HWK list which was interested and quite capable. Also ran into a AABBX list. Rebel swarm can be scary. :)

Most of the other lists I wouldn't call too unusual.

Thanks SableG. - i am living vicariously thru you when u r playing those shuttles :) ur 3 shuttle build looks good - id play that - just dont have all the needed upgrades... yet - You just have to improvise and play the best squad possible with what upgrades/ships u have eh?

interesting that ur Fett variant is doing the best. i suspect it is ur experience with the large ships and ur unpredictability when flying them that is skewing those results - the shuttles in particular take skill to use optimally.

ill keep watching this thread with interest and pop by with a post now an then.

I'm fairly certain that the Fett build is not objectively better, only that a number of conditions (including luck) on the first two nights meant I was winning. Honestly, I used the Navigator ability more than I used Fett's ability. I usually knew direction, it was distance I would vary.

And yes, I was a bit excitable when I was buying my fleet, but I know the feeling of not quite having everything you need to try to build a list you are interested in.

I really should write up more full battle reports with pictures.

FYI - We are planning on investing in some inexpensive play mats for those that don't have/bring them. To those of you that have been letting myself and others use yours, thank you very much, it means a great deal to me and Madness and has helped very much!

Feel free to continue bringing your mats, but know that we will hopefully not need to keep you late/etc waiting on people to finish any more.

Know this has been a problem the last few weeks and given store Championships coming up and the league growing beyond what I had even anticipated, Madness and I will be investing in making our play spaces as a ccommodating as possible!

Obviously, the GF9 ones that the store sells will still be much nicer *hint hint*, but we should be covered for further expansion/tournaments.

Good to know. I'm glad Madness is supporting us! I did buy a mat the last time I was there, both to support the group and for myself at home.

Look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Friday at 5pm can never come fast enough!

Tonight was fun. I flew the following list for 4 games:

Kath Scarlet (38)
Expert Handling (2)
Rebel Captive (3)

Academy Pilot (12)

Academy Pilot (12)

Omicron Group Pilot (21)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Intelligence Agent (1)
Engine Upgrade (4)

Total: 100

I played 4 games and went 4-0.

That last game against:

Ibtisam (28)
Fire-Control System (2)

Ten Numb (31)
Fire-Control System (2)
Autoblaster (5)

Wedge Antilles (29)
Push the Limit (3)

Total: 100

was the closest for tonight. I lost the shuttle and one TIE. I used Expert Handling several times with Kath, always placing myself in terribly surprising and terrifying positions. The remaining TIE (with two damage) scored the final hit of the game.

My list is doing quite well. Kath is terribly stressful to fight against, the doomcow can be a terrible beast to face, and the TIEs provide a surprising amount of support.

I just realized that I misplaced two cluster missiles cards. They are in the card protectors. Has anyone come across them? I must have left them there two weeks ago after running my bomber list at the end.

Another great turnout! 20 people and 4 demos! We are coming up on the final two weeks for this league, but don't fret, will be another immediately following! Reminder: the final week I will be cutting off games at 10pm to distribute prizes!

There are a lot of people in the hunt for the big prizes, Hope to see everyone next friday!

I wonder who will finish with the most points...

I didn't do as well with the Lambda list. I had a harder time because the dial made it harder for me to keep ships within my arcs. I also played against Fitz's HWK/Lando build, which is much better than I thought it would be. I fared better with a Rebel swarm though (XXBYY).

As a note, Matt, since your match forms have the information, I thought I'd clarify something in case it comes up again (it did last night). Modified Match Wins are converted to Wins if the player with the most points has destroyed 33 more points than the other player. If a player concedes, it's just a normal Win/Loss.

During the next league, you should consider switching to tournament scoring. Also, I'd actually like to play timed matches if possible. I could fit in more games that way. I'm thinking about getting a chess clock or something.

If anyone wants to play furballs or escalation matches, I'm down for that as well.

I doubt I will convert to tournament scoring, since the only way you can get modified wins/losses is because of time limits, and we have not yet had those since we haven't really needed them and that is a lot to keep track of since people show up/leave at different times. Also, it does not reward people for coming and playing games if they lose every game, which is very discouraging and against the nature of the league. The points system you are referring to WILL be used for any tournaments, but does not make sense for the league. If I was using the tournament scoring it would be almost impossible that Sable and a few others could lose, as opposed to now, where it is possible (but unlikely given his lead) that one of the people in the 20pts range go on a tear and beat him in the final two weeks.

You are welcome to play a timed game with your opponents if you/they agree to it. It can be good practice. I will still only count matches as a Win or a Loss for the purposes of the league though.

This is another great opportunity to remind everyone that there will be several large prizes at least half of which will have little/nothing to do with your overall win/loss ratio, and that the league will reset in a few weeks and we will start fresh, so you will have plenty of opportunities for the nice swag!

Matt, I have found the scoring format you use to be enjoyable, as a new player. Simple win/loss without time limits have helped me with the introduction to the game. One of my games last Friday would have probably been a draw if there were time limits and both of us benefitted from the extra experience in maneuvering thru the astroids (over and over :) ).

I also enjoy the scoring system. It's good for the league. Of course, I may be biased. ;)

Seriously though, I really enjoy the game and I hope to help others do that as well. I'm not invincible. :)

We know. Sooner or later you will get tired of winning so much and switch to fielding 4 TIE/Advanced just to prove they are viable. Or so we could hope. ;)

I've been toying with adding a dash of TIE Advanced to a couple of my lists. :)

Ugh. I may "live" to regret my words. :P

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I may head there a bit early to avoid traffic.

Two questions, if you guys don't mind:

1) What is an escalation match? I've heard of furballs, and have played a few (they are fun, for sure), but haven't come across anything for escalation matches.

2) I actually like the HWK, and enjoy running Roark and Kyle together, and was curious what the HWK / Lando build was? I rarely run the YT, but when I do, it is typically with Lando over Han or Chewie. So it seems like this build could be right up my alley.

Lastly, I hope to finally be able and make it out to one of these Friday night game sessions. Our school's soccer season just ended, and life got considerably easier as a result, so hopefully I'll be seeing you guys soon... :-)

Is it safe to stop saying "great turnout" and start calling it "average"? 21 this week =)

REMINDER: we will cut off scoring this week at 10pm and I will distribute prizes! Good luck to everyone!

Feb 21 we start fresh!

I should point out that my number of matches is actually 20, not 19. 17-3 is right though.

I can attest that it is possible to beat Sable. Just not easy. I think this last week was his most challenging list so far. Even more than his bovine squads.

I was planning on being there this Friday and then I realized that Friday is also Valentine's Day. Sorry guys, my wife trumps even X-Wing.
