I've played several games now and I'll say that it's a fun distraction that you'll spend a little time with then move on to something else. Since it is a beta test I don't know what they're going to change by the time final release rolls around but right now all the ships are pretty twitchy. And as of right now is mouse only. I don't see any way of changing to a joystick. There are no upgrades in the beta. I can see the page where you would add in upgrades but there's nothing to add. There's also no option to change your paint scheme either you're stuck with the default ones. Right now you can fly the X-wing, Y-wing and T/I. Those looking for realism can move on right now. T/Is have shields, torp launchers and a massive boost ability. When you target someone as long as your point of aim is inside of a circle that outlines the enemy ship your lasers will magically track them. And they have a number of moves built into the game. For example if you want a loop press "Q" if you want a split-s push "E". Those built in maneuvers are so much faster than just turning with the mouse that dogfights are usually both people using the split-s over and over again until you run out of energy. I'll do my best to answer any more questions.

I think the game shows promise (I was also in the beta) but I won't be giving it any money. I will use it as a free to play distraction and nothing more. I hate the canned maneuvers, and the non-canon shields and launcher on the squints, and the fact that the Y can keep with with the squint, but the basic game is actually fun. The ships fly well, and there appears to be plenty of room to grow, and this is an EARLY EARLY EARLY beta, so I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised by the game.
Disclaimer: I'm not a huge player of flight sim games, so I prefer this game being a little bit "easier" than a true-2-life space flight sim.
I like the maneuvers. Since the K-Turn flip and the complete flip start out looking the same, it adds another level of complexity to dogfighting.
Look and Feel: The game looks great and sounds great. I like how it's true flight - unlike some other flight sim games I've tried in the past which were basically a 2-D plane - This game lets you fly straight up or straight down for awhile if you want - though it does attempt to level your view off to the normalized view once you stop flipping. The only problem right now is that it is difficult to tell if and when you've killed someone. Sure the ship will explode, but if multiple people were involved, you may not know who got the killing shot unless you examine the log on the side of the screen (Small text).
Power management: You have "enegry" that powers your weapons, shields, and maneuvers. this energy refills over time, but you manually have to balance it on the fly - and it's simple. Holding X will begin to refill your shields if they are depleted - which consumes energy. A Normal fight might go like this: You see your target and hit your afterburners to get in close to him - which spends some of your energy. Lets say you use 50% of your energy getting into range.. then you let off the throttle and slow down to "normal speed", which allows your energy to begin refilling. But you quickly begin shooting, each shot drains some energy and before you know it you are out - so you now have to stop shooting long enough to regenerate a bit of energy, but your opponent has slipped behind you and now he's starting to shoot at you! You end up taking a few hits, cutting your shields down to 20%, but now you've managed to save up enough energy to do a K-Turn and boost out of there. You get away, and duck behind some space debris - flying slowly while your energy regenerates. Every time it gets up to around the 25% marker, you spend it all to replenish your shields. After 20 seconds or so you are back to 100% and ready to find that guy again.... or maybe another!
The game is very fun, but I can't see spending more than an hour or 2 a day playing it. Excellent distraction though.
I like it but not allowed to talk about it.

The hazards of beta duty.
No code yet so.. no game for me... sad panda

You guys and girls make it sound like it is open, is it? I got the code the 17 but I got a message telling me the server was closed.
As for the TIE Interceptor having shields and torps I can assure you that is canon. The TIE Fighter and Interceptor apper to be the most modular craft on the Imperial side, the Y-Wing being the Reb equv. The Interceptor can afford very powerful mods because lots of them share the same reactor The Avenger has and it has high energy cost systems with energy to spare.
It seems most Elite squadrons mod their Interceptors and fighters same goes for special deployment flights, squads, wings, groups. You dont see other TIEs modded anywhere as many times.
The squadron the comes to mind with the most moded TIE Interceptors are Avenger Squadron, they had more mods than the Royal guard Interceptors, and they had shields hyperdrive and planatary flight mods. During the Dark Empire era the Imperial Navy units that followed Thrawn had shields as standard.
Two X3 squadrons , the prototype TIE Interceptor, had two torp launchers one at the least had a hyperdrive, they might have had shields to but since I dont own "Shadows of Yavin" I cant check if they had shields. They were commanded by reb double agent Colonel Kell Bircher. When he was pretending to be a Imperial he dressed in a all Red TIE Interceptor flight suit.
As far as lasers go the cannons on some Republic era, and all ships after that era, have computer-linked fire capabilities. You can even switch it on and off in X-Wing A, if the ships have it, and Rogue squadron 2 and 3. When you see the lasers moving on a angel of attack that is not ahead than that is what you are seeing. They do it in movies eq 3-6. If you are meaning a single laser beam is constantly changing its flight path then that is prob not cannon.
it is open from 11Am to 9pm pst
It's in closed beta, and yes, we aren't "supposed" to talk about it, but it's not like I had to sign a real NDA. I used to do serious testing for Sony which required NDA's signed in blood. This game's clause is more like they are asking you not to publicly trash talk the game, since it's not final yet. I have nothing really BAD to say about it anyhow, it's fun and I'll probably dump some cash into it when it goes live.
Got into the beta and tried it. Didn't like it. When I can use a joystick for controls get back to me. Otherwise I'll pass on this.
As some one that has been playing games with flight lately, I am truely disappointed with this game. I was hoping it to feel like planetside or at least swtor style flying. But no this feels very sluggish. Let's hope they add in the ability to bank and not just turn. I will be waiting to test it again later once they have made a few changes.
A and D let you bank
Remember, you signed up for the beta in order to provide your feedback and made the game better. Ranting about how it's not what you expected on a Miniature Wargame forum isn't going to help Area 52 make it into the game you want to see. Free-to-Play games like this live and die based upon how well the developers adapt to the player's demands.
There is a 'Survey' link in the upper right corner of the www.starwarsattacksquadrons.com main page. It only shows for beta participants. Let them know you expect from the game.
The survey button doesn't work. Well, it worked once, but after you've taken it once, you are restricted from giving any more feedback in any possible way. Most beta tests have SOME kinda of way to communicate with those who make the game. This game does not. It's actually my one big complaint with the game. You cannot talk in chat, you cannot re-take a survey, you aren't allowed to post on their facebook about it, and there are no forums for it. There is literally no way to tell them anything.
Hm. That does suck. I do hope some kind of forum or community is started that they can pull feedback from. Otherwise, yes, this game is doomed.
Edited by SpyralAnyone have a spare key for this? Big fan of XvsTF growing up and would love to give this a try.
Have at it:

I was going to do something like this, but I misplaced the spare key they gave out to invite friends.
Oh my god this game is fun.
Crabbok said basically all you need to know, and I can't really say too many details.
BUT OH GOD THE PAINT JOBS. XWMG PAINTERS
YOU BETTER PLAY IT
IF JUST FOR THE PAINTJOBS. Rodent mastermind, falsehood, others, you guys. you guys need to do these paintjobs because holy CRAP they are just... JUST AWESOME.
I can't wait for this game to go open so I can post about it ALL the time. It's just so -fun-. The first dedicated star wars flying game we've had since Rogue Squadron II.
SINCE ROGUE SQUADRON II.
Just on that merit alone it deserves your time. Because this is them putting their foot in the water. If this succeeds, you can guarantee another X-Wing game. It's no flight sim, but it IS fun and hooooly crap is it a battle of the wits. You CAN win by outsmarting your foe.
And that is extremely important.
You don't win because your ship is better. You win because
YOU were better.
And that's how every game should be.
iirc Star fighter and Jedi Starfighter came out Rogue Leader. And then there was Rogue Squadron 3, but apparently there were a few land based missions in that one. I'm excited to see how all of these small betas tie into the big picture. Game play is fun, but a bit repetitive. I'm not a fan of how the "break left/right" work in conjunction with turning. And it REALLY pisses me off that you have to maintain the same orientation. It really messes it up when you go upside down chasing someone.
My friends don't want them so here you go people
