Star Wars Attack Squadrons Beta

By drylndsurf, in X-Wing

Since it has Squadron in the name and from what they show in the trailer it looks like it might be the later of the two.

I'm worried because it looks like they gave TIE Interceptors some sort of torpedoes or missiles.

I saw on one of the gaming sites that the trailer isn't in game images, but is concept art, the same may be true of the .jpg's.

As far as giving ships missiles/trops... If this is anything like World of Warplanes and other games like that... Odds are it will be an upgrade option.

I guess those fancy afterburners at the Interceptors are upgrades too ... we are going the have a completly different story here...

From everything that I've seen and heard about it so far I'm going to bet that this will definitely be more like Rogue Squadron and less like the TIE Fighter games. Which doesn't mean I'm not excited for it, I'm just expecting more arcadey fun than the depth and complexity of the flight sims.

To be fair... I don't think anyone outside the team making the game knows anywhere near enough to make that call. I mean I saw the same thing, but right now that's based on nothing more then rampant speculation and a trailer that from what I saw isn't even in game footage.

On the other hand... It's apparently going to be a browser based game... At least that's what it sounds like when they say "open web", and if so that means it's going to be a less complex game then something like World of Warplanes.

I definitely want this to be more 'simulator' and not an arcade game. I really don't know anyone that doesn't want that. I'm sure it will have a lot in common with Battlefronts space combat, though. Thing is, I'm also sure it will be fun no matter what approach they take. Sure, I'd like to dust off the old Saitek Flightstick after all these years. As wide-open as this beta seems to be, I get the feeling by the time of actual release, it will be more simulator if we all harp on it enough.

Well maybe will be like the "Trench Run" game on the games section, just a fun game without too much depth.

I just want to say something real quick, guys. This is a free to play game that they're rolling out for one reason.

They're seeing if star wars flight games are truly a viable market. So, even if this isn't that great? Or exactly what we want? If it flies off the entirely metaphorical shelves and people play it for a solid year...

Well you can expect more X-wing. This is a test run for a viable market. Don't worry if it isn't perfectly what you want. If you just enjoy it, if you play it, your chances of getting something way bigger and better will increase tenfold. This is the equivalent of dipping your foot in the water to check the temperature.

Sure there's water and yeah you can certainly swim but you want it to be comfortable and not frozen, right?

...I'm actually writing a game story based on both a Rebel and Imperial squadron, since I've been inspired by this game (X-Wing, not Attack Squadron) so much. I really hope this is awesome, because it might give me more incentive to buy a new computer to play it.

So, is this game in-cockpit (a la Tie Fighter) or one of those sub-par behind-the-ship kinda games?

I'm hoping in cockpit but I would take third person if nothing else. I liked both the TIE Fighter games and the Rogue Squadron games. Since it has Squadron in the name and from what they show in the trailer it looks like it might be the later of the two.

I'm worried because it looks like they gave TIE Interceptors some sort of torpedoes or missiles. PLEASE!!! In the name of everything good and holy, please do not be a clone of Star Wars Battlefront space combat! swas_screenshot_full6.jpg

Interceptors were easily moded to carry multipurpose warhead launchers. They could carry 12 concussion missiles and were for b.v.r. combat. Interceptors had the same reactor as the Avenger so mds like this had no effect on the Interceptors capabilities.

MY REFRENCE is from Star Wars TIE Fighter the complete Stele chronicles.

Come to think of it, a "Modification" card enabling any ship to carry warheads for X additional points would be interesting. But I digress...

I'll be interested to see how they've balanced across Rebel and Imperial fighters...

Just like in 'World of Warplanes' or 'World of Tanks' i guess ...

The planes 'N tanks go ftom tier 1 to tier 10 ... while tier 1 is the weakest and tier 10 the strongest.

If you push the play button, then there is a matchmaking process. If you have a T1 plane, you will be matched with other T1 or T2 planes. Starting with Tier2, you are matched with opponents up to 2 tiers better then you ...

So, I fear in AS it will be like this :

Empire:

Tier 1: TIE Fighter 'light duty'

Tier 2: TIE Fighter 'heavy duty'

Tier 3: TIE Interceptor

Tier 4: TIE Advanced x1

Tier 5: TIE Advanced x2

Tier 6: Assault Gunboat

Tier 7: TIE Avenger MK II

Tier 8: TIE Avenger MK II

Tier 9: TIE Oppressor

Tier 10: TIE Defender

Rebels:

Tier 1: Z-95

Tier 2: Y-Wing

Tier 3: X-Wing

Tier 4: X-Wing 'modified version'

Tier 5: X-Wing 'even more modified version'

Tier 6: B-Wing

Tier 7: T-Wing

Tier 8: V-Wing

Tier 9: XY-Wing

Tier 10: 'Millenium Falcon'

There's no A-Wing or TIE Bomber on your list, Starkiller, and I can assume they'll have both of those at some point. e_e

Thank you for your comment. Please feel free to add any ships you like into any position you think it fits in.

also, you can see a Firespray in the image on the site. Likewise, I doubt there will be that many tiers, and if the TIE Defender exists, one figures the E-wing should too. Why you have an airspeeder listed is beyond me.

I'll be interested to see how they've balanced across Rebel and Imperial fighters...

I would be happier if they just make it true to cannon with no ballance. With flight simis they can and have done this before. In the TIE Fighter and Xwing family of games they did keep it ultra close to cannon and they where still pretty fun.

Come to think of it, a "Modification" card enabling any ship to carry warheads for X additional points would be interesting. But I digress...

I want the same level of modification you see in Armored Core, mech warrior, ghostbusters, and aliens colonial marinds all rolled into one.

I dont want to just swap out laser cannons I want to mod to mod the diffrent aspeks of that cannon as well engines, sensors, the works. I would like to make the Star Hunter TIE Interceptor with its monster laser cannons and make that BTL A4 that was in ROTJ that had that medium laser looking turret instead of having that gosh durn ion cannon. Heck maybe throw on some 7.2 with some cycle booster so I can buzz saw any Imps that come at me.

I hope so, too - but if they took the 'WoWP' system - and it looks like this is the case, we will have this Tier1 - TierX matchmaking. In the end it depents on how the system is translated into the Star Wars theme, meaning it can still be a fun game. I too wished they came up with the old TIE Fighter game with new graphics instead ... or X-Wing vs TIE Fighter

Please also add a flying banana to this list if it fits your needs and remove what you don't like.

I wonder why the V-Wing is in your list, it's either an outdated remnant, or a atmospheric ship. Definitely not high tier.

The intention of the list was to explain the matchmaking process of WoWP only . It is neither correct nor complete....

Why not just fly the star killer? That would be so much easier flying through cap ships and stuff. YOU COULDN'T DIE.
