A few questions that came up last session

What happens when you activate Blast against a single minion group? A minion group is treated as a single target so it is a bit unclear as blast affects another engaged target.

There are a few rules for Despair when a Despair does not seem to be possible. Specifically installing a mod, but there are others. Challenge dice come from skilled opposition, talents, and destiny points. Is there another source of challenge dice I'm missing (like arbitrary GM decision)?

Despairs cannot be cancelled so a Despair result cannot be impacted by a player's skill level, right? Whether it's 0 or 5. I just wanted to be sure becasue some Despair interpretations (like a Starship collision) seem like they should have their probability lowered by the actor's skill level. I guess the reroll talents are supposed to mitigate this. Are there "downgrade difficult dice" talents?

Finally, can you elect not to do something after you see the dice pool?

Finally, can you elect not to do something after you see the dice pool?

Do you mean after you see the number and types of dice but before the roll, or do you mean after the roll? Personally, I'd allow a player to change his/her mind before the roll, and think of it as the character weighing the odds and thinking twice. After the dice roll, though, it's a matter of actions having consequences, and dealing with the consequences is part of playing the game.

Thanks. Yeah I meant before the roll. Like if they see a bunch of challenge dice and maybe the fact that I'll be spending a destiny point to upgrade one.

So for example the PC says they want to shoot at an enemy engaged with a fellow PC.

I say it looks like this guy is really tricky to hit and there's a good chance you'll hit your teammate.

They think, well it's medium range (2 difficulty dice) and since a friendly is engaged one difficulty die will upgrade. So the pool will be one difficulty and one challenge. I can live with that. Yeah I'll take the shot.

Now I (GM) say upgrade the dice pool twice (adversary 2) and I'm spending a destiny on another upgrade. Now they are looking at three challenge dice and they want to decide not to take that shot. Can they say no or do they have to take it?

  1. Do regular damage to group's combined wound threshold. A kind GM'll say you can activate the Blast against the group as well. An insane GM would let you activate the Blast against the individuals.

Blast only affects targets that are Engaged with the original target so for a Minion Group you would apply the extra Blast effects for each individual within the group that is Engaged with the original target. Since Minion Groups are not automatically considered Engaged whether or not they are is up to the GM but it should be obvious most times when you describe the scene.

I have, in the past, simply allowed Blast damage to stack on top of normal damage when attacking a minion group or, in one case, a rancor (due to its large Silhouette).

I'd let them reconsider up to the point I decide to flip a destiny point.

That's basically the call I made. It was a bit metagamey so in the future I'm going to warn them more in game by saying something like "this task looks very dangerous/difficult becasue xyz."

Good idea. I hadn't considered Destiny Points in my response, but I agree with whafrog: if they flip, they commit.
