Saturday we held a small tournament and due to time constraints made it three games of 45 minutes each at 60 points per squad. I've been itching to put my shuttles to work, so I experimented with the following build:
Omicron + Weapons Engineer + Fire Control Systems + Engine Upgrade (x2)
Game one I faced three Black Squadron TIE Fighters with Stealth and Marksmanship. I started the shuttles on opposite ends of my side of space, facing forward. He set his TIEs up on my right to focus on one shuttle while my other shuttle moved to engage. I immediately felt my set-up facing forward was a mistake - a 45 degree angle would have allowed more flexibility to adjust to my opponent's set-up. I managed to pop all three stealth devices and get one of the TIEs down to 1 hull, but I was never able to get more than one shot on him in any turn, he rotated out his ships well enough to avoid injured ones getting hammered, and he was rolling exceptional green dice so I ultimately conceded with one shuttle (having three hull) left.
Second round was a bye for me, so on to round three. I was facing two B's w/Adv Sensors, one with an Ion Cannon and the other with an HLC. I didn't make the same mistake as the first game, and was able to adjust much better to get some great shots on the B-Wings. Moving 0 with the shuttles and utilizing my previously-obtained TLs from FCS proved a great combo, and with the slow dials of the B-Wings kept him hung up bumping me pretty frequently so that he frequently only had one shot. In the final round of combat before time expired, my opponent had both B's with three hull left each - I managed to move so that I had range one shots on both B's and took them both out, surviving the return simultaneous fire and earning a full win with both shuttles living to see another day.
Overall I really enjoyed the shuttles. They're a little tricky at first, but I got the hang of them quickly. There were times I wished for Advanced Sensors on them, but I think the usefulness of all those TLs was at least as good - especially in a 60 point format where I was fighting so few ships that I could maintain TLs on both potential targets almost the whole game.
