Paint Recipes

By Arden Fell, in X-Wing

Just thought that with the vast arry of re-paints on the go it might be nice to have a thread for the newbie (like myself) who wants to repaint their minis, but are unsure what paints they will need to get for the best colour matches, engine glows, etc.

So I thought that if we can get the following format it would be a cool reference instead of trawling through all the threads looking for the ship colour scheme you liked:

  • Imperial / Rebel ship title;
  • picture of finished ship;
  • a list of paints used - Primer, Base, 1st Highlight, 2nd Highlight, etc.;
  • a brief description of how they were applied, expecially if you have done pre-shading or a fancy wash or something.

Ok?

I'm looking forward to seeing the results of this as there are some cracking paint jobs on the go now.

I'm interested in reference photos people are using.

All my ones would be "I used some Grey-ish Vallejo paint where the label has rubbed off, so I have no idea what it's called."

What color are X-wings supposed to be? I've seen everything from white, to light gray, to a kind of bone yellow.

I doubt the Rebels had a paint colour code for their ships though, wouldn't it be more a case of whatever was available/close enough?

The ILM models for the original trilogy were painted in Polly Scale Reefer White. The red was Polly Scale Caboose Red. Sadly, Polly Scale just stopped making paints about 2 months ago.

For the Royal Guard TIE Interceptor I painted:

I used Citadel Blood Red over a grey primer and then washed it with Nuln Oil wash. The grey is Adeptus Battlegrey and the black is Chaos Black mixed with a Matt compound to get the shine out.

It is a deeper red than the FFG one will be, but I prefer it. Actually, the darker color is due to the very dark wash. If I had used white primer, a different wash and done more highlighting it would have been bright and cheerful.
