Lusion's First Repaints

By Lusion, in X-Wing

Hello,

I've given in and tried some repaints after being inspired by the work of Rodent and other folks on the forum. I haven't painted in about five years and I wouldn't consider myself good but my obsessive desire to have my Imperial ships a uniform colour has won out.

Here's the moment I thought "What have I done?!" after stripping my TIE Fighters following my first botched attempt at repainting them:

Here's my first finished TIE Fighter repaint next to the stock model:

I messed up and got paint all over the plastic peg, so I decided to order some gimbal mounts after seeing another forum user's impressive fleet and magnetised it.

I've now finished the other TIE Fighter from the starter set and my TIE Advanced:

Sorry for the image quality, all of the photos were taken on my phone.

Just finished my Interceptor:

Thanks for looking!

Nicely done. The accuracy of the blood stripe is very well done. Very straight and tight.

That is a nice stripe, but... is it missing on the lower side of the wing?? Mine are rather wide, but I wanted then that way.. nice job overall though.

You have to love the pivot-roll upgrade on these models. I am working on doing this for all of my ships too. Thanks for sharing!

The gimbal mount is cool, and can be fun to roll over a ship to enhance the movement and all, but I really just don't like the look of the ball on the bottom of the ships.. if I could inset the donut magnet in the ship I would do that.. or inset the ball (a smaller one of course) but overall the novelty of it wore off on me already.. I did it for a few of my Wing of Glory/War WWI aircraft.. fun to show a hard bank or climb or dive, but it wears off.. lol..

You need a small ball or an inset to make it look awesome...

;)

Yup... pretty much.. lol :D

Thanks for the comments guys, woops looks like my Interceptor isn't finished after all oneway hahah. In terms of the width, I had the Fel's Wrath card infront of me at the time but I think Soontir and Turr sport larger stripes, would love to see yours.

The novelty hasn't worn off for me but each to their own, what I might do later down the line is paint/varnish the pegs and gimbal mounts black which would make them blend into the game mat.

Here's my X-Wing from the starter box, not really satisfied with the finish but learnt a few things whilst painting it (painting solid black onto mostly flat surfaces wasn't a fantastic idea) , might get a strip and repaint later on along with my Firespray.

The Barron's Fighter!

:D

Nice mounting, and fun painting!

Hahah, that was exactly the look I was going for Boss, would have liked to add white lines to the side of the black but don't think I can pull it off yet even with masking tape.

Thanks RedWilde :)

I'm tempted to throw my GW brush in the bin and try out Winsor & Newton after a recommendation from a friend but they're pretty expensive, has anyone used them?

Haha.. that red x wing is cool too.. sorry I brought up the missing stripes.. just OCD that way.. I'll either look for an old pic of the stripes I did or tak a couple new shots of the old and new ship I did.. and post it up.. mine are wide like Fel.. though I like the look of thinner ones, I am happy with the ones I did

I prefer the pricier sable and some synthetic brushes, they do work very nicely.

When choosing a brush, it's always best to test the tip. There's usually a little bit of sizing on the bristles to hold it in a pretty shape. You want to make sure the brush holds its shape without the sizing. Slide the plastic sleeve of the tip if there is one. Then flick the tip several times with your finger. If it goes back into a nice pretty pointy shape without bristles sticking out in random directions, that's the one you want.

Yup...what RedWilde said, and it does not hurt to lick the brushes after you have whipped them around in the water a bit.

;)

Indeed.. spit keeps it nice and pretty.. lol

It is the secrete of all great painters... ;)

Hahah, no worries oneway - I'm glad you did otherwise someone would of brought up it up the first time I used it at my local gaming club.

Thanks Red, will pop down to a hobby store this week and try that method out.

It keeps the hair in line, there are brush conditioners too, but just use spit...works.

So what are you painting up for us next?

nicely done that man!

Thanks straetski. :)

I've just got a Firespray left for you Boss, it's finished for the time being but I've ordered some weathering pigments so will probably come back to it once I've had a chance to try them out.

This was a really quick repaint, just added red and silver, left the rest of the stock model paint and gave it a heavy wash as I wanted to try and get a grimy, worn look.

In terms of models left to paint, I've got a primed X-Wing, a cursed TIE Fighter (third repaint attempt) and I've just ordered two B-Wings but I'll need to pick up some new brushes and expand my paint range before I start on them.

Here's a shot of the Interceptor chasing down the X-Wing, the battle mat was designed by a forum user and the picture really doesn't do it justice.

That thing looks like it came out of the farthest reaches of The Outer Rim...very nice.

Yeah all I can see is if you hit it with a nice layer of weathering and brush the panel lines to bring them out a bit more. You do not need to much because the dark grim looks bad ass IMO.

:)

Great repaints, Lusion!

Would it be possible for you to do some type of tutorial or list the paints you used? I'm still new to painting so any help is appreciated. :D

Thanks Black, ofcourse - are there any ships in particular? I'll send you a PM.

Love the firespray, nice and dark... can't wait to see the weathered details...

Wow. These are beautiful.
