Asylum Pack make up

By TheCesspit, in CoC General Discussion

I wondered if anyone has any thoughts on what i see as the biggest problem with the LCG... the make up of the Asylum Packs.

I'm no longer into CCGs and collecting games, or even playing at a tournament level. I just like having fun with a good game (and this is a good game, with good theme, art and mechanics).

However, to make more streamlines decks, you always need multiple copies of some cards to keep things ticking along. The 30/10 split of the Asylum Packs doesn't help this. Some of the single cards seem to be the sort you'd want at least two of in a deck... but I'm not buying two packs, as then I'd be left with 3 'common' cards I can't use.

Would a 20/20 split make more sense, as those that really need three-of-a-kind can buy two packs and have 1 complete set like new, while the more casual player has enough copies to have some reliance in the decks?

Just thinking... maybe I'm off base here.

i think the 3-1 thing works fine for casual players, one pack is more than enough and it allows ffg to get money. since there is alot of players that seem to like card games but just dont have the money or time or just have other hobbies to go for ccg.

ffg also know they have a fan base that will spend hundreds on boxes to get a playset of great cards(its not a large enough fan base or we'd probably still be getting boosters), so by including only 1 ofs in the packs they insure that they can still make more money to keep the game moving on those that cant seem to spend enough.

in the end its cheaper to buy 3 asylum packs of each one in the set than to go rare chasing. so it even makes the 'gotta catch'em all' players feel like they are still getting a deal, while ffg makes a solid profit.

its a very good medium that ffg has with the lcg model.

on top of the money situation it also creates a very even playing field. plus its alot easier to get into the game. cause if you get in later you can probably ask other players what are good packs, and you probably wont need to get 3 of every asylum pack if youre gonna focus on one or two decks.

if they did the 2 of everything everyone would need to buy 2 packs, and in the end the sales would probably do worse.... the casual players would have a playset of nothing, and those that are willing to buy 3 wont need to. so you'll end up with casual players still buying one pack and maybe being less happy, imagine only getting 2 dark druids or 2 bringer of fires in one pack...... and those that would buy 3 packs only getting 2 which is a one less sale you know you could easily have made.

PJaholic hit the bullseye. Good analysis.

I would have preferred a 3x13 with 1 Cool domain card or something. I'd love to have a few more copies of some of those one offs, but yeah, I'm not buying multiple packs, cause I don't want 3-6 "extra" commons...

Either you are or you are not willing to shell out thirty bucks for a play set of each AP release.

Exactly. I want two more copies of Julia Brown but I'm not prepared to pay out for two more AP's anf get multiples of cards I can't use and everyone else has.

I'm very much a casual player, and I love the idea of fixed packs. The only AP I have at the moment is the Mountains of Madness, which I really wanted because its based on one of my favourite stories. I had to buy 3 copies, not because I needed 3 of every card, but because there were only 4 polar cards in the whole pack. I don't necessarily want 3 of everything, but I need enough to build a deck around.

I still think I'd like to see future packs stick to one or two factions only. Give casual players a nice theme deck or something. You can still keep the 10x3,10x1 thing, but make the packs more self-contained and easier to build around.

True. You'd get 10 plus of a faction if an AP cycle could go:

1) AG/MU 2) SY/CT 3) HA / YO 4) SH / NEU 5) beef and potatoes 6) custard and flan

but they would have to release all packs at once or some factions would get cards months before others. it would suck if your favorite faction was the last one to get its pack.

I agree and don't ever see FFG doing this.

I really like the current format of the Asylum Packs,

not to say that there couldn't be variations or improvements in the future.

I desire to participate in multiple formats which would include leagues,

competetive tournaments and casual play and so far for my money the

APs are working out. I do have to say that I love the themed serialization

of the Julia Brown saga with the poster inserts!

Hey Hastur!

Still planning on running leagues in my area?

When I get out there (likely in mid to late-October) I have every intention of running Leagues, tournaments, etc in the area.
