Lieutenants in expansions, expansions using expansions & solo play

By Beren Eoath, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

This topic covers 3 most interesting and important, from my perspective, thing I would love to see in the future Descent expansions starting from the one that will come after Shadows of Nerekhall. So here goes:

1) I would love to see lieutenants figures and there decks as part of future expansions even if they would cost a little bit more. This would be great becouse we wouldn't have to wait until they release them but play with those wight from the box

2) I would love to see expansions that would need to play not only the core set but an expansion as well. For example the base game+LotW or base game + LoR. This model would allow them to not reprint parts of the game and use more conditions and monsters from expansions in expansions. This would also make this game even better then it is now.

3) the last one is and expansion that would allow players to play a fully cooperative game without the Overlord. I know there are fanmade moduls that alow that but an official one would be better and whta is more important far more playtested.

Those I my thought about this game and ideas that I wanted to share. I would love to see those comming from FFG as official one to make this game even bigger and better.

Cheers

to point 1) it would be great, if they released the lieutenant packs simultaneously with the expansions, in which these lieutenants are introduced, so we can use those minis right away. i agree.

to point 2) i already opened a thread on this issue, so maybe you want to look it up and contribute your thoughts. the thread is called "expanding expansions".

to point 3) i really think that if you want a cooperative game, you should simply buy another one. maybe "gears of war" is for you. there are a bunch of other similar games. i think cooperative games are boring though, since an AI opponent can never be as intelligent as a real human and consequently the whole game is far less challenging and interesting. however, the most important point is that descent simply isn't meant to be a fully cooperative game. descent is a title that matches one evil versus a group of heroes and that's its core. that's what descent is. furthermore, if you look at the scenarios (especially in the 2nd edition), they are quite complex. how would an AI system ever be able to effectively pursue those victory conditions?!

I have readed your thread, it looks like every fan of this game is thinks the same way. So FFG should consider making expansions that to be played need not only the base game but some other expansions as well.

I don't think about a solo module that would cover all the mechanic but a single expansion that would focus on it. Just one. in Mansions of Madness they did something like this. MoM is very like Descent so one evil vs players but in the Call of the Wild they made a scenario that is played with no Keeper (Overlord in MoM). So it can be done but only in some specific scenarios/quests. So amybe they could do something similar to Descent 2nd. One expansion that would bring new monsters, heroes and other new stuff but with a booklet with No-Overlord rules and Quests. Just a single expansion and nothing more. We all know that Descent is and always was a gme of heroes vs Overlord and this will not change.

Cheers

PS. A good dungeon crawl that was cooperative I still think nostalgic about Warhammer Quest. That was players vs the game and it was fun.

1) I have a feeling we may see the new lieutenants released at the same time as the expansions that hold them we will see with SoN.

2) As has been alluded too see expanding expansions.

3) Mom is nothing like Descent. It may appear to be reskinned but I couldn't disagree more, MoM is a very theme driven horror romp where the strategy is through who and how you slow characters down before killing them but all the time making them think they can win, I personally love it. Descent is what I would call a square driven strategy game where exact placement is required for a good strategy in MoM the squares are massive and you can travel through other peoples spaces without an issue. The best thing about D2E is the overlord isn't the caretaker of a room by room kill session and instead a really interesting competitive tactics game with an under belly of RPG and a heatseeking approach to characters aka attack the nearest adventurer would be poor IMO and lose the spirit of the game. If you want games like that try mice and mystics or the such.

1) If I understand what you're saying, you want lieutenant packs released physically within expansion boxes, to which I don't ever seeing happening, since they're designed to be playable outside of the expansion, i.e. you don't need Trollfens to use Bol'Goreth's agent and plot deck. As others have said, lieutenant packs will likely be released alongside expansions, but almost certainly not within expansions.

2) Expanding expansions would be cool. We do have a thread on this, but I don't have much else to say about it anyways

3) Absolutely no interest. Descent is, and is marketed as, a strictly competitive game. I know there are a lot of solo gamers out there, but not every game needs to be solo compatible or cooperative. Descent is one such title.

I got great news from the new Game Trade Magazine - the new lieutenants from Shadows Of Nerekhall will be released simultaneously with SoN expansion. And what's more important all new lieutenant packs will be released simultaneously with the campaigns in which they appear staring from SoN. That's great and I just can't wait until this will happen.

Cheers

Released simultaneously, but not contained within the expansion box, right?

Sounds like a perfectly good idea to me!

So, other expansions are planned !

That part isn't really news =P
