Wave 4 Speculation

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

Well, I wasn't meaning they are messing up the game, but there are enough threads on here about 'bettering' the game, so there are some who think there is room for improvement.

Suffice to say, I feel they should have a presence here, if only to give us.. even an illusion.. that they appreciate our enthusiasm and interest in the game.

I'm not sure why you're so dead set on the idea that they don't appreciate the fans.

I've heard multiple interviews with Jay Little, Steve Horvath, and a number of other FFG guys where they say multiple times how pleased they are that people are digging the game.

I can think of VERY few gaming companies who regularly (or even on occasion, for that matter) have any sort of official presence on their forums. Even then, I've NEVER seen them respond to rules speculation on future releases.

Our experiences seem to differ then.. I have been on boards where the game designer has a lot of interaction with the fans and even still sends us news of new releases and is happy to take take into consideration our ideas and and gives us his opinion on what we have to say..

I'm sure FFG appreciates us in a broad way, but would it hurt to come here.. their board.. and say so.. I don't think it would...

Someone mentioned not visiting the board to avoid potential IP issues. I'm not sure how many of us actually read, and completely understand, the user agreements you must approve before you can post but many of them will basically say anything you put on their board is fair game to be used without compensation, or even acknowledgement, to the person who posted it.

Honestly, I'm sure there are many EU fans here, and if not, I'm sure we all would just be happy with new ships to use.. FFG just has a bad reputation.. this set back... I feel.. could be the death knell of the game.. or at least a change in what they put out. Not trying to be a negative nancy here, but they have a history of starting great games, then letting them die..

I think future EU products will depend on how well the Hawk sells. If they sell a lot, then it is a safe bet that they will make more EU stuff (but, hopefully, not that sea turtle ship. It is really silly [sorry for the hate. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder]).

What I would like to see:

For the Imperials, the Tie Aggressor.

For the rebels and the imperials, the ARC-170

I know there is a lot of hate for the prequels, but the ships in them were still cool. Everybody used the 170 after the Clone Wars, and it was still considered an elite fighter for a long time.

Finally, I would love to see that third faction, and I'd love to see them have the Ixiyen-Class Fast Attack Craft. It looks like what a tough fighter should look like. I'd post a photo, but I'm working from my phone.

Some people seem to have cataracts, I mean a few people even like the Lady Luck.

Seriously though I'm absolutely sure that we will see EU ships, they have said they wanted to do 30+ ships, and seeing as there were only 11 suitable ships in the films.. that would suggests that they have been planning to do EU from the start.

Definitely, Though I think it probably should be Rebel, they were still using the ARC during the Rebelion where the Imperials had almost entirely phased them out.

I know people have differing tastes in ship design, and I find no offense in poeple bashing on the 'seaturtle'. I played the roleplaying games a lot in the past.. I like the Ghtroc for various reasons, but I know many were not fans.

If they plan on 30 ships, they need to get off their backsides and keep deadlines.. I know the problem is most likely suppliers, and not really on FFGs shoulders, but they have had issues with games before.. and I'm sure there will be issues in the future.. and all we can do is deal and hope for the best. Though they could get the ball rolling earlier and sit on product rather than let us wait.. lol..

Good thing FASA had such a squeaky clean copyright and legal record and never ever gets used as the example of violating intellectual property.

1) When did FFG say they wanted to do 30+ ships?

2) Would the Tantive IV and Transport count toward that total?

any thoughts about what the rebels will get in terms up new upgrades in the Transport expansion?

[crosses fingers for playable astromechs]

Well we know theyll get stuff relating to the 'new large ship abilities' and energy management. So speculate from there...

They have the licence for the Rebellion Era including EU ships.

So the Aggressor would be in scope, the ARC-170 don't

The Aggressor would be interesting as one of the last unshielded Imperial ships but with turret upgrade.

They are never going to make everyone happy. That's simply not a reasonable goal in any design. Some players will want it more complex, others will want it simplified. Some will want higher quality miniatures and be willing to pay for it, others will want more cheaper now. The internet is never in shortage of people complaining about something they don't think is perfect, or frankly people expecting direct interaction everyone.

I have the advantage of being in Minneapolis close to FFG, and being able to go to the local events (and knowing a few folks that work there in non X-wing related roles). I have talked with all the folks involved with X-Wing at various events. They do care, they do appreciate the players. It's not just something they put on for interviews.

Think of the scope and volume of X-Wing players. Do you think they would get away with identifying themselves on the boards and not being bombarded with questions about the next wave, the next one after that, this ability, that upgrade, could they do this, could this ship pleeeeeeese be next... People obsess over the slightest detail on the cards. Wild speculation (just look at this thread) based on nothing. People tout their random speculations as if they were expert opinions. Were I a game developer, I would second guess identifying myself for a game this popular. Gladly I'm just an computer geek.

I'm 99% sure that FFG looks here for suggestions, that's why they have this forum set up even though they don't participate. Also, I have made a post in the rules area about cards which started a huge debate and it was clarified in the next FAQ.

Personally I think I'd be ok waiting on Wave 4 if they would just release more Aces packs to refresh some of the older ships. I'm mean the Y-wing needs it soooooooo bad. Also I just like variant paint jobs, even models. The y-wing had coverings at one point. There are so many different paint schemes on the rebels side, but not so many on the imperial side. Still it's an opportunity for new pilots and upgrade cards. I'd even be happy with a flat pack of upgrade cards and pilots, no ship.

I guess I'm not entirely thrilled with the idea of most EU ships. Many are ugly in the sense of they just look like boxes or blobs. Many lack the detail that the movie ships have. That being said there are some that I would welcome because they feel a bit more seamless to the universe such as any of the YT series and TIE avenger.

If I had to make a guess on why things take so long to come out, I'd say it was coming up with ideas and testing them so they don't make the game unbalanced or just... bad. There are so many different scenarios and to run through them all and come up with rules that are fair seems like a huge task to me. Distributers are not that hard to come by, printers are easily found, there is a lot of competition for their contracts I'm sure.

Heck, there is competition for printer time within the X-wing line itself. I mean, the A-wing and Interceptor are already back on the slate for a reprint. How long with Wave 3 supplies last before they need a reprint? While the supply is beginning to catchup with the demand, reprints do affect the production of other products.

I would much rather have FFG's release of maybe 2 Waves a year, rather than the rapid vomit pace of Attack Wing.

People are acting like news of Wave 4 is months over due or something...

Wave 3 was only released in September, about 3 months ago. It was 3 months from the release of wave 2 until wave 3 was first announced. In that 3 months we've had news of the Imperial Aces and 2 Cap ships.

So it's not like we're gone for an extended time with no news. They're on pace for what they've done in the past... If we get into late January with no news about Wave 4 then perhaps we should worry about it.

But again, it's not like they're really late on news of the next wave, not based on the time between Wave 2 and Wave 3.

Yeah there were unexpected news. I like to know more about what we expect = wave 4

BTW ... what about this starfield tile set? Was it cancelled?

It's perceived as overdue as a result of the sheer predictability of the previous waves. Now no one really has any idea. The current best guess is the YT2400 and Z-95, but I'm not placing bets. It could just as well be some sort of Merc/Smuggler/Bounty Hunter wave in order to slightly change up the game. That's not my guess, but I feel like it's just as likely as anything else. So, really, here we are in the vastness of space with no real direction. I think the large ships have come with mixed reviews, and while the Aces is pretty well received, it's not really telling us the direction we're going.

I think it went back into development, because I don't think anyone really wanted it the way they designed it

The star field I don't think is the greatest idea they've had. Personally I think that it'll start more fights and cause more frustration than anything because of the fact that it's a bunch of pieces. I've played several board games where the board was made of several pieces and it only take a small bump to shift things. Since there is no grid in x-wing that can mean the difference between losing a ship or not. I much prefer the mats over board pieces.

I heard the starfield kit went back into development till they can perfect the miniature zamboni to keep it perfectly frictionless between rounds.

FFG would probably be better to make double-sided play mats, instead of double-sided tiles that have to be pieced together. Unless they are going to include a frame to place around the tiles to keep them in place? Playmats now get bumped, but at least when they do, everything moves with them.

As for Wave 4 speculation...i'm at a loss. Bomber and B-wing i could have seen. Shuttle and HWK i wouldn't have guessed.

Why they don't just sell a prited cloth ;)

They should ask MINDOT how they do it...

I said for wave 3 its the TIE Bomber, B-Wing, Shuttle and YT-2300 'Outrider'

The Hawk was quite a surprise.

Right now I think wave 4 will bring us the YT-2000, Z-95, TIE Avenger, TIE Aggressor (or IG-2000)
