TIE Boarding craft - mission and speculation

By newmagrathea, in X-Wing

As many of you know the TIE Boarding Craft is nearly completely physically identical to the TIE Bomber. The TIE Bomber actually started out as the Boarding craft and then was changed into the bomber - Wookieepedia. I was wondering if anyone has come up with a mission using the TIE Bomber as a TIE boarding craft. Of course if would also have to involve a capital ship so the boarding craft would have something to board.

Just some of my quick thoughts on a possible mission. Once the boarding craft is touching the base of the capital ship it can then mount itself to the ship. It cannot mount if ioned or stressed as mounting is an action. Once mounted it then would have to breach the hull which is another action and cannot be done ioned or stressed.

I was also thinking about some sort of mechanism for the amount of troops on board, more points for more troops. Perhaps some sort of bonus or ability for different amounts of troops, maybe that would take place of the pilot ability.

Probably keep the movement the same, just add new actions and remove the bombs, missles and torpedoes.

Another thought that I had is: do you think that FFG is working on something like this with the rebel capital ships coming out?

I've played the Rescue mission from the Lambda pack with lots of bombers and they are really good at picking up survivors and getting off the board.

From what I understand they don't even have weapons... maybe keep them at 6 hull and let them have an Evade action and a 0 movement set?

Interesting thought about taking away the primary weapons too, that way the Imperial player would really have to protect that boarding craft and deliver it to the rebel capital ship. Draw their fire would be a valuable upgrade for this scenario.

I use DX9 stormtrooper transports from Shapeways. I have a pair of them. IT takes several turns to board.

Turn 1: DX9 must be touching or overlapping the capital ship base to clamp on.

Turn 2: DX9 cuts through the hull.

Turn 3: boarding operation begins.

That's a good point, boarding would take at least a turn maybe two. Perhaps that would have to be a dice roll to see if boarding would happen or not. Perhaps thats what would cost points, buying more/better troops to increase the speed/success of the boarding. The rebels can spend points that way to but for defensive dice.

Out of universe the Boarding craft existed first. In universe since it is a alternate version of the Bomber it can only be as old as the Bomber or is newer.

I would like to see how boarding actions would work in this game. Lets just hope that the rules foer this game dont follow the rules of WH4OK BFG, I would be ticked to have to buy ships over and over agian just because the ones you are replaceing have been prema taken by boarders.

Now if I wanted the Shadow squadron TIEs in this game I would prob have to contend with them just being an upgrade, but hopfully If they had a Imperial Bomber aces pack it would come with the the Shadow Squadron TIE mini, TIE Bomber advanced mini, and the TIE Interdictor mini.

JFYI A Shadow Squadron TIE looks like a advanced TIE Bomber with TIE Defender panels. It carries four Ion cannons and boarding torpedoes filled with a combo of Terror Troopers, Terror droids, Terror Bioroids, and a Terror Walker. When it comes to boarding this TIE would be the most epic in this game.

The TIE Interdictor would just be epic in that it carries four times the ordanice that the Bomber carries. In this game it should carry four times the weapons a bomber carries although it might be the only ship you buy in a match.

I would be surprised if FFG released a specific TIE Boarding craft model since they would be the same.

My intention was to come up with my own rules, ship stats and mission to use a bomber as a boarding craft. It think that we've established a good mechanic here, but it'll need some play testing and tweaking I'm sure. I think that the same rules could be applied to other boarding craft but those ships would have different stats and maneuver dial.

The one thing that will need tweaking is the boarding unit cost. I was thinking 3 points per unit. You get one unit per boarding craft or capital ship standard, but for each boarding unit you purchase you get another die to roll for boarding. Once a successful boarding has happened the game is over and the imperials have won. The rebels can win by destroying the boarding craft before boarding happens.
