Why doesn't FFG just POD the core set?

By Emirikol, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Just a thought. Is there any reason, in this day and age, that a system should ever not be available as a POD?

All this game needs is some dice stickers.

There are definitely issue that need to be taken into consideration for a company thinking of offering products via POD - who do you get to do it, how much will it cost per unit, how much you'll make, whether it will impact on your future plans etc. In the case of Warhammer, you've also got to take the licence into consideration - even if FFG wanted to (and there are good reasons why they would not), GW might not let them.

If there weren't Core set reprints on the horizon I'd think PODing that box would be great at this point in the cycle. They'll obviously want to sell their hard stock first, I guess. Neat idea, nonetheless.

The dice make POD-ing the core box stuff difficult. You can't really play the game without them, and I'm not sure you can just export them to existing lightning press shops. That said, I'm sure it'll be more doable in the near future as 3D printing tech improves and proliferates.

POD stuff is also typically a lower quality card stock than the other WFRP3 cards. No problem for things like talents and actions, but it does make POD a less optimal great choice for wounds, miscasts, mutations, insanities, etc. Anything you have to shuffle would then need opaque-backed sleeves, which are not common at that tiny card size.

All of Fantasy Flight's POD offerings are cards and sheets. Whatever company they are using to print the cards must not be able to manufacture custom dice or cardboard cutouts. It's probably cost prohibitive to find a printer/manufacturer in the USA that would do both.

Are there plans to reprint the core set?

There's just a rumor.

Lord, it hit the Upcoming page back in September but there hasn't been much rumbling outside of that. Just the usual ticket for a trip on the Speculation Train, which we ride hard on this particular forum. Got little engineer hats and everything :)

I'll shovel the coal if you want to be the engineer :) Now all we need are a couple Bugman's patrons to manage the caboose.

I emailed FFG asking what was happening with the reprint of the adventurer’s toolkit. I was told that they don't have an ETA on it, which is why it is still in development status. Not the most helpful response, but at least it was a response. I emailed back saying that it sounded like it was in limbo and if there was any chance that the reprint is cancelled. I never received a response.

I figure they might be waiting until after the holiday season to see how many units they need to order, but who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if one day all three WFRP3e reprints disappear from that list.

I would try emailing or calling them. The more people they have asking the more likely that they will get the reprint scheduled.

They probably saw our last year of amazingly insightful and productive edition-warmongering, shook their heads, and hit the "Forever In Development" button.

At least there is one good thing about Edge of Empire in regard to WFRP3e. It has exposed a lot of roleplayers to the unique dice system and a number of those people are now interested in WFRP3e. Unfortunately the WFRP line is dead and the reprints are in limbo so I'm not sure how much good it did. FFG's RPG department is too busy with the next iterations of Star Wars and Dark Heresy to capitalize on that opportunity.

On a side note I'm looking forward to Warhammer Diskwars! Although at the same time I'm dissapointed that the Warhammer Invasion line is now over.
