Question from Potential Noob Player

By rochambeau, in X-Wing

Does the game allow for mixing of the factions?

Reason I ask is that I recently tried Star Trek: Attack Wing and the complete freedom to mix ships, crew and technology really ruined the game for me..

Nearly everyone used Picard on some ship, etc.

Hoping X-wing is not like that...

There are only 2 factions. Imperial and rebel. And there is no mixing.

I got into this before attack wing came out. And the mixing and matching of that put me off.

For tournaments, not currently. There are mirror matches, with Imperial on Imperial or Rebel on Rebel. However, outside of friendly matches where both sides agree, there aren't any mixed force matches. I should point out that, unlike Attack Wing, pilots are part of a specific ship. You can't take the best pilot and put him in any craft, he and the craft are a package deal. Darth Vader will always be in a TIE Advanced* or Wedge will always be in an X-Wing.

*Darth Vader can also be an upgrade card for a limited number of ships, but only one or the other in a given list

There is no mixing in the official game. If you and your opponents decide to let it in, the balancing system allows for it quite easily.

Also, in the attack wing game.. if people are playing a certain faction then there should be no mixing at all.. and Picard is unique, should only be one on the table anyway.. unless they have a rule that says otherwise...

Not only are there no mixing, in non-tournament based games, you usually play Imperial vs Rebel. In tournaments my might have Imp v Imp or Reb v Reb, but I don't see this very often outside of tournaments.

The fact that you can't mix has a huge effect on the way the two different sides play. In general Imperial ships are more plentiful, maneuverable, and fragile (many have no shields) while Rebel ships tend to have more firepower and staying power.

Actually in Attack Wing there are no rules against mix and matching any faction ship, captain, technology, etc. Some of the tournament events give a very small bonus if you play a "pure fleet".

I haven't played it much, so didn't know that.. seems .. to go against what it should be.. why have factions at all then.. just put out ships and let chaos reign.. lol.. sorry.. the games that I have played have been very 'faction oriented' that is.. Feds have all Feds and Klingons or Romulans are all those types.. to mix and match seems anti climactic to me, and against the grain of the concept..

strange.. but a unique captain should still be unique I would think... Picard can't be in 3 fleets at once.. and should not be on anything but a Fed ship, typically the Galaxy Enterprise.. but if they are throwing out the norms of factions then I suppose they throw that out too.. sigh.. another reason I will not purchase this game.. lol

Wait ... you can put Picard, Riker, Data and so on ... in a Romulan ship if you want to? and thats legal even in tourneys? WTF

Ugh yeah, you can give the Enterprise plasma torpedoes or whatever if you feel like paying an upcharge. :P

Ive yet to see the penalty accumulate enough to screw anyone out of any sort of worthwhile upgrade, though.

AFAIK the only "penalties" for mixing factions are those that are specifically stated on a card themselves and I've only seen a couple of them.

Otherwise it's basically a free for all. I wanted to play "pure" Romulan but their Captains blow in comparison to Picard and Kirk.

Picard's special ability is to grant a second free action, which is huge. That's why nearly everyone uses him in tournament play.

Based on where the game is now I think it would make more sense to just eliminate any faction penalties/bonuses and treat it as anything goes anywhere (which it nearly is already).

We enjoy "Canon" games too. Alot of the Alliance pilots defected with their Imperial ships,we will run mixed lists for those. Ex: Biggs and Hobie defected with their TIE's so we toss them in with a tweak or two to the card text. Not "Tourney" legal but fun none the less...plus you can get a really good furball going with some mixed Rebel lists....
