Unknown pilot in Imperial Aces Expansion Pack

By TheRealStarkiller, in X-Wing

One pilot is still unknown in the Imperial Aces Expansion Pack .

Maybe there is news about this matter I don't know of.

... but ...

Could this be Maarek Stele ?

Maybe for 25 points and PS7, just like Turr Phennir? Wouldn't this be awesome? ^^

What do you think?

Why FFG keeps this a secret?

Are there even other famous Interceptor pilots you know off?

You really do have a huge man-crush on Maarek don't you :P

Hey I loved TIE Fighter. Its still today one of the best computer games ever made.

FFG brought HIM into their game ... and made him the most utterly useless unique pilot in the game.

I don't think they wanted to mock people who playes TIE Fighter ... like "Yeah, here you have him. but he sucks monkey balls! ha ha" ... He is just in the wrong craft. So, I hope FFG is about to correct this.

But, is there another pilot who appear on 2 different fighter on the game?

I still need to buy a lot so I don't know, I think that Luke appear as pilot on an X and crew on the yt. right? But he is not a pilot on the yt.

I think he works best in the second wave, if you have enough ships to do that. His special ability isn't really effective until shields have been penetrated. Did Steele have imperial military rank? I'd like to use his ability on a capital ship.

Vader is also available as a pilot or a crewman.

Theoretically Soontir Fel should end up available as an X-Wing pilot at some point...but again, not yet.

When you take a closer look at the ability text it ... don't match ... ****! Looks like there are only 2 rows in the ability text box of the unknown pilot.

But the name could match ... what do you think? Is it Maarek with a different ability? .... would this make any sense?

I think you're an obsessive fanboy... :P ....

But seriously, I think it's highly unlikely as the pack is a 181st / Emperor Guard double pack and Maarek never flew with the 181st.

"... It was only after meeting Baron Soontir Fel that Stele felt renewed allegiance to the Empire and joined Fel in the 181st Imperial Fighter Group. ..."

o0 ... this looks a bit butchered ...

Maarek was one of the Emperor's Hands and he actually flow with the 181st. See source above.

What does this "edited 15:20 by TheRealStarkiller" mean at the bottom of this Wookiepedia page.

Same source tells about

Evir Derricote

and

Gunn Yage

as members of the 181st. Would one of those names fit in? Its hard to guess ...

A few people have suggested Derricote, I think he is far more likely.

As long as he doesn't have the same ability.

Other forums have been talking about how to fix the TIE Advanced, but my only problem with the TIE Advanced is Maarek's ability.

Well ... I tried to replicate the card like seen in the preview picture.

I think the unknown pilot is Gunn Yage.

hmm ... wait ... she is more a pilot of the generation after Turr and co ... in the Legacy era

This just wont fit. And Derricote wasn't even a decent pilot...

The unknown pilot is a hard one.

Im still hoping for Maarek - but if it isn't him, i hope for a comeback in an Avenger or even in a Defender.

I still don't understand why anyone thinks Steles ability is bad... you choose 3 cards and give the defender the worst one... possibly giving him 2 damage or killing the defender out right (A-wing) .. either you guys don't get what that means or you just want broken abilities that don't make sense just give overpowered effects...

The ability to hand your opponent a serious critical is very powerful.. in any game... admittedly you must tear down shields, but that can be done easy enoufg with support ships.. and dice can be an issue as well..

Or maybe I just look at the game differently than most people, I don't try to change a game I just play it and have fun... I think overanalizing every aspect of a game breeds dissatisfaction and can ruin the fun.. or at least it does for me..

Maareks' ability would be fine in a less expensive ship with attack value 3.

I guess we will just disagree then.. I find it powerful as is..

We? You and ... who else? Disagree what?

Have you ever used Maarek in competitive play?

We.. as in you and I...

I have not played in any competitive competitions, and I do not find that significant.. competitive play so far has been heavily played with swarms.. and in an atmosphere of many ships the finesse of the game disappears in my opinion..

Competitions are frought with people who overanalize the game and who play to beat down the competition, it also takes a few months to have people figure out the winning combos...

When you play games in your local groups the dynamics are different, unless you have a group of tournament players.. most of my friends are playing to have fun.. we play lists that we think will be fun to run and sometimes we win and sometimes we lose.. I an going to try to get into some tourneys soon, but I have things going on mow that may make it harder for me to get there..

The "issue" with Mareek is that while the effect of his ability is good most people have some hang-up where three dice is "powerful" and two is "weak". I don't really agree but I can see why the relative ease of dodging his attacks might make some people dismiss his ability as something that on't go off enough to really matter. Personally I just see it as making things like marksmanship or other attack boosters a requirement. Opportunist in a squad with other high skill pilots might be very fun.

Mareek's ability is powerful but just very very limited and without spending even more points on an already overcosted ship, it is completely dependent on dice and game state.

Compare with Wedge's: Always on, always useful. No reliance on dice. No reliance on gamestate.

Compare with Vader's: Always on, as useful as you make it, does not rely on dice, little reliance on gamestate.

Can you build it up and make it more worthwhile, yes you could. But at 27pts on a defense orientated ship, you shouldn't have to.

Markmanship is a must to generate crits. Opportunist wouldn't really help there. Save it for the Sabers.

To use Maareks ability with somewhat efficiency you have to be at range 1 with a unshielded opponent, use the action for the markmanship effect and hope for a crit, as well for poor defence dice.

So it is no no-brainer and additionally you have to rely on luck.

Unlike the abilities of the other unique pilots, like Wedges. Wedge works right away. Just shoot and boom - or Lukes' .. focus light.
