Southern Ontario Regionals Results

By Sir_SI, in UFS General Discussion

The Southen Ontario Regionals provided many top tier players and decks from all over canada. We had a turn out of 22 players. We had 4 players from Rochester, 1 player from Calgary (impressive considering the distance), 4 Players from Montreal, 3 Players from Ottawa and many local players.

The top 8 for this event was very interesting; featuring some people whom I would consider "consistant winners" and some people who came out of left feild and genuinely surprised me at their performance. As always, Kin Tong Chan was able to top 8 (3 out of 3 regionals so far) at a event once again. From my knowledge, Andre Picknell and Marc Renaud have top 8'd in Montreal. Coming out of the gates smashing people up with a 6 handsize felicia was Brad Penstone who got king of swiss at this event. Surprising there were was 0 order control at the top 8 of the event, but there were some in the mid tables... I guess feline spike was just too much for them.
Aggressive decks reined supreme at this event as people throwing various attacks at each other most decks sporting ira-spinta, feline spike, and/or melancholy mercurius as kill conditions using heel snipe as a support card. There was only 2 true control decks in top 8 which were Kin's J.Talbain tri-symbol control deck and Matt Hughes' All/water Sukura deck. Chun li, Zi mei, Felicia, Andrew Olexa can be classified as aggro decks, while our lovalble hatman's deck is classified as a hybrid/slower aggro deck. Overall evil/fire hybrid Akuma won the day, piloted by Andre Picknell (who top 8'd at Montreal last week) from ottawa, Congrulations Andre, I'll see you at the dinner of champions.

Top 8 were as follows

1. Andre Picknell-Evil/Fire Akuma-Ottawa
2. Don Chambers - Death/Fire Zi Mei - Morning Demon-Oshawa
3. Brad Penstone - Air/Good Felicia - B-Rad-Oshawa (KING OF SWISS)
4. Kin Tong Chan - Tri Symbol J. Talbain - Awesome Dhalsim- Oshawa
5. Marc Renaud - Air Chun Li - Ottawa
6. Guillaume Favreau - Tri Symbol Remy - "Hatman" (kick him out of team Phail... he failed at failing happy.gif ) -Montreal
7. Jeffrey Kahn "Giggles" - Air Andrew Olexa - Rochester
8. Matt Hughes - All/Water Sukura - Rochester

After 5 rounds of swiss, top 8/quarter finals were as such:
Table 1:
Felicia (win) vs Sukura

Table 2:
Akuma (win) vs Chun Li

Table 3:
Remy vs Zi Mei(win)

Olexa vs J. Talbain (win)

Semi finals-
Table 1:

Table 2:

Just want to thank Sir_Shajir and everyone in Oshawa again for an amazing tournament. Was a lot of fun, I wish we could have stayed for the festivities afterwards but we had a long ride home that night. Especially after the epic trip the night before. We left about 2pm, and about 3 hours into the trip our truck broke down on the 401. We called family in Ottawa and they came out to get us with 2 cars so we could continue our trip and they could go home with the towed truck. So we didn't get there until about Midnight. Was all worth the trip for sure though.

Will see you all again at Canadian Nationals, and you Shajir at the dinner at GenCon for sure!

who was the guy from calgary playing?

I (Calgary guy) was playing Mignon and managed 10th (will post a full report here within the hour or so in results section). Which is why I was hoping you'd show today Kiit ^^

Needless to say it was hilarious for me becuz when you asked on Wednesday if I had any ideas for Mignon the answer was not really a no... Oo, hope you feel better, or were you just not wanting to suffer your bros Huey this morning?

Glad to see Rochester made top 8 as a Rochesterian that had to work and couldn't go :-( Gotta give props to Giggles for doing good when he usually gets frustrated very easily (I pray he didn't embarass us too badly) and Hughes for once again proving that he can't run bad checks in a deck. Any chance you could spoil for us what the Fire/Evil decks were running attack-wise?

Looking forward to seeing all you guys come down for our Regional too gran_risa.gif .

Since I intend to provide true accounts in my player report, and since I expect the players running the decks (both being really cool dudes) won't mind - the top two fire decks were running:

Zie Mei:

Melancholy Merc, Spinning Beat, Senkyutai + more*

Akuma:

Lunar Rebellion, Reverse Flayer + more*

* I can't recall the other attacks specifically, but I think they were both running Akuma's Hadoken and I think I saw some Zessen Hoho as well.

Any idea which Felicia it was in top 8?

Actually in my Akuma I just ran

4x Gaishiki Lunar Rebellion
4x Reverse Flayer
4x Melancholic Mercurius

I had some Akumas Hadokens in originally but I cut them the night before the tournament.

I won't state any decklists, or spoil any cards in the decklists... but I will say that Brad was playing the 4 dot Felicia.

whoot to sucking!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing turnout and the best major tourney I've been to in my playtime of UFS. But yeah, I was playing the 4 dot Felicia Spiking turn 2. It was actually kinda funny, my matches lasted roughly five minutes, and it gave me a CRAPTON of downtime. Anywho's, I'll have my report and decklist up soon.

Behold the power of the mighty low zone attack. No one can block them it seems. Anyways, grats on winning with Akuma. He is gonna be beastly when he gets some solid moves that dont check 2s:)

1 Iori (into Guy)

Having faced that guy, it was Iori into Kazuki. Unless he also had Guy in his sideboard.

Comments will be up later. Although I will say that Tri-Symbol Remy is crazysauce and I will post the decklist shortly. It's a bunch of cards that somehow managed to work well on that day. Also, Shajir, I failed at failing on that day because I epic fail'd coming to the regionals with an astronomically epic speeding ticket (which was busted down to an epic speeding ticket with an epic politeness maneuver - this is what the internet does to you folks, it turns everything epic). So yeah. Remy can actually make it in a somewhat competitive environment. Who knew?

Awesome =D
Congratulations Andre!

Sorry I couldn't make it >_< Open house for college was on the same day D:

Props the the Remy player, glad to see someone make him

Thanks for the heads up about Felicia! I'm never going to win with her since Feline Spikes are (being completely serious) impossible to obtain, but it quells my curiosity.

LoLgasm

Congrats guys! Looks like an awesome event... I'm missing getting to travel and face you guys! Thankfully it's less then two weeks to the PotM event at this point!!!

I was the Sakura player....I still can't believe I actually got in with WORST symbols in the game right now. The instant the first round started and was facing Chun Li I was about to go crazy for how foolish I was. Still, guess it worked out enough.

I hear Sakura vs. Sakura was epic stalling.

Yeah I wanted that picture but it didn't mesh well with the particular macro.

It will change after this weekend, fire is about to be completely redefined. The biggest problem I'm having with my Zi Mei fire deck is how to fit all of the new cards into the deck.

Start by cutting the excess fat and what doesn't work with Manifest Destiny, then move on from there.

Yeah, the other Sakura deck tanked against 3x fully multipiled spikes. School Uniform gaining 8 vitality...who would have thought that'd keep me from killing her. I actually had to wait to cycle so battle prowess wouldn't work before I could try to win >_<

Don't want to hijack the topic, but I've been informed that I should make this into a shirt and wear it at the Can Nats. Y/N?
