With the Chewbacca upgrade card, are you allowed to discard a face up damage card, or just a regular face down one?

Any damage card. Most players save Chewbacca for a face-up card.

What's more it may be "saved" for specific face-up cards assuming you can accept the result you are dealt.

Most game Chewbacca is held until the ship is almost dead or until it is dealt a face-up card that the ship will not handle well.

I have a followup question.

I have Chewbacca Crew on a ship with one hull left. I now recieve 2 damage from an attack.

I chose to discard the Chewbacca Crew card. Does my ship still have one hull left, ie one of the damage was cancelled by the ability and one damage took down the newly gained shield from the card second ability?

Or is my ship destroyed, as only one of the hits was cancelled by the cards first abiity, but the second ability was "to late" and the second damage took the last hull?

Seems like Chewbacca triggers when you are dealt the first card. Then the second card goes against the shield. You survive.

I also just noticed that the Chewbacca crew member will let you dodge Proton Bombs as well, as it happens when you receive a damage card!
