Hoping to pick up WF3ED What do I need?

By knastrarn, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hey! Was hoping to get into warhammer fantasy. But not sure what I need to buy and the core sets are all sold out!

Which books are an absolute must for my gaming group and which ones are just nice to have?

Thanks in advance!

This question has been asked on here many times. But seeing as how I asked for some advice and the top posters told me to go look it up on the components breakdown PDF I will chime in and say...

You want the Players Guide, Creature Guide, and GMs Guide for sure….that right there is enough to play the game. If you can find a set of dice, get those….otherwise grab the GM Vault or the GMs Toolkit for a set of dice (comes with a GM Screen too). If you want the action cards, tokens, character/creature stands, etc. Grab all three Vaults. If you want the spell cards, you'll need to get the Winds of Magic box. If you want the blessing cards for the priest careers, you'll need the Signs of Faith box. The Adventurers Toolkit, Hero's Call, and Lure of Power (and even the Witches Song) have career cards that you don't get in the vaults. But they are all worth it for their own reasons. Lure of Power has a ton of social-encounter-centric action cards, and all of those expansions (except the Adv Toolkit) have a printed adventure module.

It really depends on how you want to customize your WFRP experience. The printed adventure modules are amazing. I especially like The Gathering Storm, and Enemy Within is an amazing deal for the amount of content you get….3 full length adventures linked into a massive arching campaign.

Good luck, the sale ends today I think.

If you're not gming, the only thing you need is the players guide (and some dice or the dice roller app)

If you're GMing, until you can find a core set, you'd just be really frustrated. I see now that it's out of print, you're looking at $200 for the boxed set on amazon.

Thanks for the replies you guys. Seems I need a ton of stuff if I wanna enjoy this game as it's supposed to be played. I was really turned on by the art, special dice and cards but might be a bit much if I'll need to get all the stuff Bart listed.

I GM and I usually end up being the guy who buys all the stuff for our group :(

Am I missing something? Don't you get everything that was included in the starter box (and much more) if you get the 3 hardback books and the 3 vaults?

You can get all that stuff (except for the GM guide - check eBay ~ $30) in the sale that ends today for $15 + $5 (players and creatures guide) and $10 + $10 + $5 (players, creature, and GM vaults)….

Say about $20 for shipping, thats about $125 for starter + extras and all the books are revised, complete and hard-bound….as long as you order before the end of the day today.

The game system is really great and can be played with the hardcovers, but without the dice, you're really hindered. YOu can play without the cards very easily, but the dice situation is a lot more tricky.

The vaults do not contain the Adventurer's toolkit (which is a BUNCH of the careers)..and is also out of print. The GMs kit only comes with a tiny amount of dice (which would be a nightmare if you have more than 1 player in your group). The players guide has those adv' toolkit career listings and you do not need the cards, but just to warn everyone, the players VAULT is INCOMPLETE compared to the guides and does not include the Adventurer's Toolkit boxed set.

The DICE are really the limiting factor though. You'll want 1.5 sets per player. That translates into 18 bucks per player: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=93&esem=2&esum=173

[edit: you could save money; on the PDF copies of the hardbacks. Honestly though, maybe try playing a game first before plunking down the money. People run one-shots online. http://ffgvirtualrpg.prediger.at/]

I agree with bart though, the game experience is a lot of fun and the scenarios traditionally for all editions of this game are great. They are NOT D&D however. They tend to be more Cthulhu-style and the combats are typically very brutal and deadly.

Bart: Swedish over here. So just shipping them would cost me 80$ + customs I'm afraid

Emir: Aw makes me even sadder :) CoC is our current main game, but looking for something to keep me interested while waiting for the 7th edition kick starter to start shipping!

Will have to keep my eyes open in case the core package comes back into print I guess :)

Older flow chart to answer your question. For other maters you might want to refer the (very) unofficial Starter's Guide to WFRP at the Daily Empire.

Minimum purchase is probably:

  • Player's Guide + GM's Guide + Creature Guide + GM's Vault + 2 Dice Sets
  • -or- Player's Guide + GM's Guide + Creature Guide + 3 Dice Sets
  • -or- Core Set + 1 Dice set

Any of those 3 configurations would work. Honestly, extra dice beyond that minimum will be a huge benefit. The dice sets are currently listed as "in stock" at FFG, which is rare. They've been out of stock for a really long time. Get them while you can.

If you've got lots of money sitting around, I'd highly recommend the purchases listed above, plus all 3 vaults (GM's, Player's, and Creature Vault), and all 4 "Ruinous Powers" expansions (Lure of Power, Omens of War, Signs of Faith, and Winds of Magic).

I don't think the GM's Toolkit comes with dice. The GM's vault definitely does.

Not sure why I thought the GM Toolkit came with dice…but then I got mine like 4 years ago…maybe I just bought a set of dice at the same time...
