TIme period for EoE.

By Atraangelis, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hello,

I was looking through the forums for this question but i could not find it.

WHat is the TIme Period for EoE in relation to the movies??

Not clearly defined, although the core book refers to the destruction of Alderaan, so some time after Episode IV. It's not all that hard to set it any time after Palpatine declares himself Emperor, though.

Really, anytime is good. Very flexable

It is pretty much 0 ABY (After Battle of Yavin).

I think it is after the Battle of Yavin, but it would work pretty much without changes anytime after the Empire comes into existence.

In fact if you go by just the original Star Wars there is no reason Palpatine must be the first Emperor. Obiwan Kenobi, Bail Organa and Luke's father all fought in the "Clone Wars" but that conflict is not defined beyond the name.

On the other end of the timeline I think it would work without any changes as long as the Empire exists, and even a bit beyond. As long as the Imperial machinery is still in place EotE will function unchanged. Even after the Mew a Republic is firmly established very little in EotE will need to be changed.

I think EotE could be easily back dated to any time in the Star Wars saga you like. That is the advantage of the game being set on the Edge, and among the "scum and villainy". A game focused on the Rebellion pretty much requires that background to work. A game set in the high politics of the Core Worlds is going to be strongly influenced by who is in power. But a game set out on the fringes can pretty much sail along. Old Republic, New Republic, Empire, Sith Empire, does it really matter on the fringe or in Hutt space?

I have the advantage in my campaign that my players are not Star Wars geeks, so I don't need to worry about which sector Admiral So-and-So was assigned to, or exactly when the Imperial Senate was dissolved. I just need to write epic Space Opera plots and let my players blow stuff up.

Awesome. Thanks so much, I am looking to start a Game up and be the GM. And was curious of the setting.

It is pretty much 0 ABY (After Battle of Yavin).

I can't remember where I read this but I believe bladerunner is correct. The time period covered in Ep IV is a few weeks, the time between Eps IV & V is a few years (three I think) and Ep VI is a year later.

I would go as far as saying that the "original" time frame is set precisely between 0 ABY and 4 ABY. Which ofc is not to say that every EotE Campaign has to be set in this time frame. I myself am toying with the idea of creating an Old Republic Campaign for EotE.

Here are the three key references from the book:

1) The small "Read this first" pamhplet in the CRB says: "The rebels destroyed the Empire's ultimate weapon, the Death Star! The loudest shot of the Galactic Civil War still reverberates through the galaxy." -> 0 ABY

2) The front page of the Skills-chapter shows Lando speaking into a Comlink in front of Cloud City. This suggests to me that the events of Episode V (3 ABY) are included in the time frame.

3) Palpatine is obviously still alive (see for example Page 366, first sentence), therefore the game must be set before Episode VI which takes place in 4 ABY.

the setting is intended to be 0 ABY, and so the information on governments, planets, etc. is going to reflect that. however, the skills and such would in any timeframe, and the equipment, vehicles, etc. work somewhat more broadly as well.

and if you trade the "fluff" around, adjust planetary governments and change ship designs and such, it'll work pretty much anytime, or anywhere. there's even a thread about using the mechanics in the american old west.

I probably will too, depending on what my group would like, but I'm going to hold off until Force & Destiny comes out (more likely after whatever Force User supplements come out). I don't want to mess around with Force Powers and Lightsaber stuff, better to have something as powerful as these play tested then just make it up.

Yeah, the limited (so far) scope of the official Force rules is really the main constraint on a campaign set before the Empire. (It would be perfectly possible to run an Old Republic game and never have the PCs run into a Jedi or Sith, but if you want the option, waiting for F&D might be a good move.) You'd have to scratch-build some gear and a lot of vehicles and starships, but at this point in the line's development, I know I'm doing plenty of that anyway.
